Marianucci Injury Shakes Napoli's Pre-Season Plans

Napoli’s new era under Massimiliano Allegri has taken an early hit. Before a competitive ball has even been kicked, one of the defenders earmarked to freshen up the back line faces a long spell out.

Luca Marianucci, the 22-year-old centre-back hoping to finally stake his claim in Naples, has suffered a serious injury to his left knee that is expected to keep him out for an extended period.

The damage came in a seemingly routine pre-season friendly – the kind of game meant to build rhythm, not break seasons. Introduced as a substitute, Marianucci lasted just 25 minutes in the 1-1 draw against Celta Vigo before being forced off in clear discomfort.

The initial concern on the touchline quickly turned into something far more serious once the scans came back.

Napoli confirmed that the defender underwent a series of diagnostic tests at the Pineta Grande Hospital. The club’s official medical update detailed the grim news: Marianucci has sustained a high-grade medial collateral ligament injury in his left knee, the result of a contusion and sprain suffered in that match against Celta.

For the player, the timing could hardly be worse.

After spending the second half of last season on loan at Torino, Marianucci returned to Naples with a genuine chance to impress a new coach and push into the first-team picture. Since arriving from Empoli in 2025, he has managed just two appearances for the Partenopei. This pre-season was supposed to be his audition. Instead, it has turned into a battle just to get back on the pitch.

Allegri now has a problem to solve.

The Italian has been tasked with tightening a defence that too often creaked last term, and Marianucci’s profile – young, tall, physically imposing – offered a different option as he tried to build a more solid unit. With the 2026-27 Serie A campaign fast approaching, that plan needs a rethink.

Napoli’s medical staff will monitor the knee closely over the coming days and weeks as they decide on the next step: surgery or a conservative rehabilitation programme. Either way, the expectation is that Marianucci will be missing for a significant stretch, removing one more piece from Allegri’s defensive puzzle.

And the clock is ticking.

Napoli open their Serie A season away to Genoa on August 22, a fixture that already looked awkward before this setback. Eight days later they walk out at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona for their first home game of the campaign against Como, when the new Allegri blueprint will be on full public display.

Instead of quietly bedding in a young defender during pre-season, Napoli now head into those early tests lighter at the back and heavier with questions.
