Mattéo Guendouzi Faces Two-Match Champions League Ban
Mattéo Guendouzi has been hit with a two-match Champions League ban after his explosive return to France in Fenerbahce’s fiery playoff win at Lyon.
UEFA’s disciplinary body ruled that the 27-year-old midfielder will miss Fenerbahce’s opening two group games — at home to Roma next Thursday and away to Aston Villa on October 14 — for “provocations and insults” in and around the 2-1 victory on August 26, a night that descended into chaos on and off the pitch.
Guendouzi at the center of the storm
Back in his home country and facing the archrival of his former club Marseille, Guendouzi played the role of antagonist from warmup to final whistle and beyond.
UEFA cited multiple breaches: violations of “rules of decent conduct,” “insulting players or others present at the match,” and provoking spectators. The midfielder was fined 50,000 euros ($58,000).
Guendouzi twice raised his middle fingers to Lyon supporters — once during the warmup and again after the game — and was seen shouting “Allez l’OM” (“Go Marseille”) in front of the home fans. He also grabbed his crotch in the wild post-match scenes that spilled over near the tunnel area. He later claimed Lyon fans had insulted his family before and during the match.
The game itself carried huge stakes. Fenerbahce’s 2-1 win sealed their first Champions League appearance in 18 years, a breakthrough moment for a club trying to re-establish itself at Europe’s top table after years in the shadow of city rival Galatasaray.
Greenwood escapes with suspended ban
Mason Greenwood, another high-profile summer arrival in Istanbul, was also cited for his role in the confrontations. The forward received a one-game ban, but UEFA deferred it for a year on probation, meaning he will only serve it if he reoffends within that period. He was fined 30,000 euros ($35,000) for violating rules of decent conduct.
Both Guendouzi and Greenwood joined as part of Fenerbahce’s heavy offseason investment aimed at closing the gap on Galatasaray, who will also feature in this season’s Champions League.
Lyon staff punished after tunnel clash
The fallout did not stop with Fenerbahce’s players. Lyon goalkeeper coach Antonio Ferreira received a three-game ban from Europa League matches, with two additional games suspended, after UEFA deemed his actions a “serious assault.”
Ferreira launched a leaping kick at Guendouzi during a post-game clash near the players’ tunnel, one of the ugliest flashpoints on a night that boiled over long after the final whistle.
Clubs hit in the pocket
UEFA’s disciplinary verdicts, released late Friday, also targeted both clubs financially.
Fenerbahce were fined 50,000 euros ($58,000) for violating rules of decent conduct and another 45,000 euros ($52,000) for fan misconduct.
Lyon’s bill was even heavier: 108,500 euros ($126,000) across a series of charges tied to the disturbances. The French side now turns to the Europa League, where it opens away to Anderlecht next Thursday, carrying both a bruised reputation and a sharply worded warning from European football’s governing body.
