Max-Edgar Chabot Rejects Angers Deal for Manchester City Move
Angers are bracing themselves for another blow in goal. Max-Edgar Chabot, one of the club’s brightest academy products, has rejected a first professional contract and is closing in on a move to Manchester City, according to Le Parisien.
For a club already stung in the goalkeeping department this summer, the timing could hardly be worse.
Last season’s standout, Hervé Koffi, shone on loan from RC Lens and looked every inch a long-term solution. Angers wanted to keep him. The market said no. Priced out of a permanent deal for the Burkina Faso international, the Ligue 2 side were forced back into the hunt and eventually turned to Anthony Lopes, available as a free agent after his contract at FC Nantes expired.
That felt like a smart reset. Now comes the setback they feared in the youth ranks.
Chabot, just 18, has been highly regarded inside the club, progressing through the academy and featuring for Angers’ U19s. His reputation has stretched well beyond the training ground. He was part of France’s U17 squad at last autumn’s U17 World Cup, a stage that often serves as a shop window for Europe’s elite.
Manchester City were watching. And they have moved.
Le Parisien report that, while nothing has been signed yet, negotiations are advanced and an agreement between Chabot and the Premier League champions could be sealed in the coming days. For Angers, it is another reminder of the brutal hierarchy of modern recruitment: develop, polish, then watch the biggest operators swoop.
For City, it fits a familiar pattern. Stockpile young talent, especially in specialist positions, and build depth years in advance. For Angers, it poses a sharper question: how do you build a long-term project in goal when every solution, from Koffi to Chabot, slips away just as it starts to look secure?
