Maxi Araujo: Premier League Giants Compete for Sporting CP Left-Back
Manchester United and Chelsea have stepped into the chase for Sporting CP’s rampaging left-back Maxi Araujo, muscling in on a pursuit Arsenal thought they had stolen a march on months ago.
The 26-year-old has turned a breakout season in Lisbon into a full-blown audition on the biggest stage of all. Seven goals and six assists for Sporting in 2025/26 from left-back and wing-back. Two goals and an assist for Uruguay at the World Cup, in a side flirting with an early exit. He has not gone unnoticed.
Premier League giants circle
In Portugal, Record reports that Manchester United sent representatives to watch Araujo in Uruguay’s 2-2 draw with Cape Verde last Sunday. They did not go for the scenery. United’s recruitment team has been scouring the market for a dynamic, modern full-back, and Araujo fits the brief: aggressive, direct, and comfortable driving high up the pitch.
Chelsea are in the frame as well. Having sanctioned Marc Cucurella’s £52 million move to Real Madrid earlier this month, they are scanning for a like-for-like replacement on the left. Araujo, with his blend of defensive industry and final-third output, has quickly climbed their list.
Arsenal, though, were there first. Reports in April claimed the Gunners made initial contact over a move to the Emirates after Mikel Arteta was struck by Araujo’s displays in Sporting’s Champions League quarter-final clashes with his side. Those ties showcased exactly what he offers: relentless running, sharp timing in the box, and the nerve to influence big games from deep.
Since then, Arsenal have wrapped up a permanent deal for Piero Hincapie, adding another left-sided option to a squad already stacked with versatility at the back. That move has not closed the door on Araujo, but it has complicated the picture. If the champions still want him, they may have to fight harder—and pay more—than they first imagined.
Sporting hold the cards
For all the Premier League noise, the strongest position belongs to Sporting. Araujo has three years left on his contract and a release clause set at €80 million (£69.3 million). That figure gives the Portuguese club both leverage and patience. They can afford to wait, to listen, and to drive the price towards that clause if a bidding war erupts.
Sporting know exactly what they have. A full-back in his prime, producing attacking numbers that many wingers would envy, and now proving he can carry that form into a World Cup. Every decisive touch in Uruguay colours strengthens their hand.
On the international front, the situation is less comfortable. Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay are staring at the possibility of crashing out in the group stage. Lose to Spain, and if other Group H results go against them, their tournament is over. Araujo has been one of the few bright sparks in a disappointing campaign, his two goals and assist underlining how much he has grown as an attacking force.
Araujo keeps options open
Amid the swirl of scouts and speculation, Araujo has kept his public stance measured. Speaking after Uruguay’s draw with Cape Verde, he refused to shut the door on a summer move.
“I’m very happy at Sporting, but you never know what’s going to happen,” he said, a line that will have echoed around recruitment departments in Manchester and west London.
He also made a point of praising club teammate Ivan Fresneda, who watched him in Miami: “I was happy to be able to talk to Fresneda, I’m grateful that he’s here and I love playing with him. I hope we can play together for a long time.”
That last sentence will intrigue Sporting. It might also tempt any club prepared to move for both players down the line. For now, it underlines a simple truth: Araujo is not agitating for a move, but he is listening.
So the stage is set. A left-back in form, a contract built for hard bargaining, and three Premier League heavyweights circling the same target. Whoever blinks first may have to pay close to the full €80 million to get him.
The question now is not whether Maxi Araujo is ready for England. It is which of United, Chelsea or Arsenal is prepared to stake their summer on him.
