Mexico Tops Group A with Win Over South Korea, Secures World Cup Knockout Spot
Mexico secured its place in the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup after a narrow 1-0 victory over South Korea on Thursday. The match, held on home soil, saw El Tri clinch the top spot in Group A, becoming the first team to advance to the Round of 32.
The first half offered little excitement, with Mexico managing only three shots and South Korea failing to threaten at all. The lackluster performance drew boos from Mexican fans as the teams headed into halftime scoreless.
Mexico came out energized in the second half and broke the deadlock in the 50th minute. A critical error by South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu, who tangled with a teammate while attempting to catch the ball, allowed it to fall to Luis Romo. Romo capitalized instantly, slotting the ball into an open net.
Both teams continued to press after the goal. Kim redeemed himself with three impressive saves that kept Mexico’s lead intact. South Korea produced several chances but couldn’t find the equalizer. On the other end, Mexican goalkeeper Raúl Rangel delivered a series of key stops, including a remarkable double save in the 87th minute, preserving the shutout.
This win guarantees Mexico the top position in Group A and the advantage of playing their knockout matches at home. South Korea still has a chance to secure second place if they earn a win or draw against South Africa in their final group game.
