Mexico Fans Trigger Tremors After World Cup Win Over Ecuador
Fans of Mexico erupted in joy as their team scored two decisive goals against Ecuador in a tense World Cup knockout match. The collective jumping and cheering caused notable ground vibrations that seismologists described as "significant tremors."
The Digital Platform for Early Warning and Comprehensive Risk Management (SASSLA) detected these vibrations linked to the moments when Julian Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez scored during Tuesday's game.
"The goal by Julian Quiñones vs Ecuador was recorded on multiple seismographs," SASSLA shared on X. "We also have records of the second goal by Raúl Jiménez at the 31-minute mark."
Close to a million fans flooded Mexico City streets celebrating the 2-0 victory, which secured Mexico's spot in the last 16 of the tournament. Unfortunately, the celebrations turned tragic for some, as three people were crushed amidst the crowd.
Human-Induced Seismic Activity Has Been Seen Before
These so-called "human-induced earthquakes" are not unusual and have been documented before. Activities such as constructing massive buildings, groundwater extraction, or fracking can produce similar effects. Large gatherings at sporting events and concerts have also triggered detectable seismic signals.
In fact, a 2024 study in Seismological Research Letters noted comparable vibrations during major events, including a 2023 concert by Taylor Swift attended by over 70,000 fans. The concert generated strong seismic signals within a 9-kilometer radius of the venue.
"All evidence suggests the signals originate mainly from crowd motion responding to the music," the researchers explained.
SASSLA detailed the incident near the Azteca Stadium: "The burst of euphoria and mass shouting produced vibrations in the local ground," and said the RaspberryShake station closest to the stadium captured an "outstanding artificial signal."
According to Sismo Alerta Mexicana, although these shakes are not true earthquakes, the synchronized jumping creates short surface waves detectable by sensitive instruments designed to register seismic activity worldwide.
"If someone walks near a seismograph, it will detect it; if several people jump simultaneously close to it, detection is even clearer," the monitoring team posted on X. "These instruments can sense earthquakes across the globe, so their sensitivity is extremely high."
Implications for Seismic Research and Infrastructure
Scientists hope analyzing these human-generated tremors can improve seismograph technology, allowing better distinction between natural earthquakes and artificial vibrations.
This research may also aid in understanding Earth's subsurface structure and help design buildings and venues that better withstand various vibration types.
The Mexico players celebrated their win jubilantly, marking a significant moment both on the pitch and beneath the ground.
