Mexico Secures Spot in World Cup Round of 32 with Win Over South Korea

Mexico continued their strong run in the 2026 FIFA World Cup by clinching a narrow 1-0 victory against South Korea in Guadalajara, making them the first nation to secure qualification for the tournament’s last 32.

The decisive moment arrived in the 50th minute when Mexican midfielder Luis Romo capitalized on an error. After a collision between South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu and teammate Lee Gi-hyuk, the ball spilled loose, allowing Romo to tap into an open net.

South Korea threatened late in the game, especially in the 87th minute. Cho Gue-sung headed close-range but was denied by Mexican goalkeeper Raul Rangel. The keeper also kept out a follow-up attempt by Yang Hyun-jun. Earlier, captain Son Heung-min lobbed the ball over Rangel, only for his shot to be cleared off the line and ruled offside.

The crowd in Guadalajara showed mixed emotions, booing their team at halftime after a dull first half but returning with energy to support their side. Raul Jimenez came close to doubling the lead in the 75th minute, but his angled shot was saved. Late in the match, substitute Obed Vargas tested Kim with a powerful strike that forced a diving save.

This win keeps Mexico's perfect record intact and confirms they will top Group A. Their upcoming last-32 and possibly last-16 matches will take place in Mexico City. There is a chance they could meet England if Thomas Tuchel’s squad wins their group and subsequent knockout game.

Despite the loss, South Korea still holds a strong position to move forward, thanks to their opening victory over the Czech Republic. Their next match is against South Africa on Thursday at 02:00 BST in Monterrey, while Mexico faces the Czech Republic simultaneously in Mexico City.
