Mike Solan Set to Lead Offaly Footballers

Mike Solan is poised to take charge of the Offaly footballers after being put forward by the Faithful County’s management committee as their choice to lead the senior team.

The former Longford boss, who left that role earlier this month, will go before the county board for ratification at its September meeting. If backed, he will take over on a three-year term, tasked with driving on a group that has been in transition under a series of different regimes.

Solan will not be coming in alone. His ticket includes highly regarded coach Joe Keane – who has previously worked with Mayo, Sligo and Longford – and Offaly great Nigel Dunne, a figure with serious credit in the bank locally after guiding the county’s minors to a breakthrough Leinster title in 2025, their first in 35 years.

It marks the latest step in a coaching career that has taken Solan through several dressing rooms and counties. He previously managed the Mayo Under-21s and was part of Andy Moran’s management team in Leitrim, experience that Offaly hope can translate into a harder edge and clearer identity at senior level.

The move comes on the back of a significant change of direction. Previous joint-managers Mickey Harte and Declan Kelly stepped away last month. Harte had weighed up staying on for another season after linking up with Kelly on the line in 2024, Kelly having been in situ from the year before, but the pair ultimately opted to depart.

Now Offaly stand on the brink of a new era. If the county board give their approval in September, Solan and his backroom team will inherit a county hungry for stability – and for proof that this next appointment can finally turn potential into something more concrete.
