Mikey Moore Nears Cologne Loan as Spurs Clear Transfer Logjam
Mikey Moore is finally on the verge of getting his move. According to Bild, 1. FC Köln are close to securing the 19-year-old Tottenham Hotspur winger on loan, with a basic agreement with the player in place for some time. The decisive step has now come from London: coach Roberto De Zerbi has given the green light.
That approval was anything but a formality. De Zerbi had been counting on the teenager at the start of the season and blocked a departure. Moore even started Tottenham’s Premier League opener on Saturday, a bruising 3-0 home defeat to Brentford in which Spurs looked disjointed and short of ideas.
The situation around him is changing fast. Tottenham are on the brink of a huge attacking reshuffle, with English outlets reporting that deals are agreed with Manchester City for Savinho and Omar Marmoush. The combined fee is said to reach around €185 million. Under Enzo Maresca, Pep Guardiola’s successor at City, neither player has had any real role, but in north London they are expected to walk straight into the picture – and push Moore towards the exit door for regular minutes.
De Zerbi has been demanding exactly that: reinforcements. Behind the scenes, the Italian has been described as insistent that Spurs move in the market, and he underlined his frustration after the Brentford defeat, when he openly criticised Moore’s contribution in the press.
“We were not ready to win the duels. We made a lot of mistakes in the pressing with Mikey Moore,” he said, singling out the youngster in a team that collectively failed to cope.
For Köln, that criticism could turn into opportunity.
The Kaminski role in Cologne
At the RheinEnergieStadion, Moore is earmarked for a very specific task. He is expected to slot into the vacancy left by Jakub Kaminski, who has departed for Benfica, operating off the right flank. There, he would balance the attack opposite Said El Mala, the surprise contract extender who recently committed his future to the Billy Goats.
Köln had been searching for that profile for weeks. Talks with other clubs, including Borussia Dortmund, did not lead to an agreement. Moore, with his pace and directness, fits the bill: a right-sided winger who can stretch the pitch, attack his full-back and offer end product, while complementing El Mala on the opposite wing.
Proven in Scotland, ready for Germany
Moore is not arriving as a complete unknown. Last season he spent the campaign on loan at Rangers, where he became a regular in Glasgow. Across all competitions he made 47 appearances, scoring seven goals and adding four assists.
Those numbers do not scream superstar, but they point to a teenager who has already handled pressure, expectation and a demanding schedule in a title-chasing environment.
If the final details fall into place, Köln will be betting that experience, and De Zerbi’s tough love, have hardened Moore enough for the Bundesliga fight.
