Milan Prepares for Zaniolo Standoff Amid Foden Interest
The tug-of-war between Nicolò Zaniolo and Udinese is turning into one of the summer’s most intriguing subplots – and Milan are quietly positioning themselves to pounce.
Udinese believed they had calmed the waters with a new contract proposal for the 27-year-old. They hadn’t. Zaniolo, unconvinced by some of the clauses and especially the bonus structure, has dug his heels in. While his teammates have already reported back and begun preparations for next season, the attacker has remained on holiday, sending in a medical certificate to justify his continued absence.
It is a stand-off that cannot last forever. Udinese will make another attempt to bridge the gap, but the mood in Friuli is shifting. If the club hierarchy sense this is turning into a battle they cannot win, they are prepared to change course and put Zaniolo on the market.
That is where Milan come in.
Milan Ready if Udinese Cash In
The Rossoneri are not just monitoring the situation; they are preparing for it. Should Udinese open the door, Milan are readying an offer in the region of €15–20 million for Zaniolo. The interest is not speculative. His agent, Claudio Vigorelli, has already been seen at Milan’s headquarters, a clear signal that the lines of communication are open.
If Zaniolo pushes hard for an exit, Milan will not be alone. Other Serie A clubs are expected to move quickly for a player who, despite the turbulence, still carries the profile of a difference-maker in the final third. That is precisely what Ruben Amorim is chasing: a left-footed attacker who can add variety and unpredictability to his offensive options.
Zaniolo ticks those boxes. So does another, far more glamorous name.
Foden: The Blockbuster Dream
Phil Foden sits at the opposite end of the market. If Zaniolo is an opportunistic move, Foden would be a statement.
The England international could become available for around €50–60 million, but only under a specific condition: Manchester City would need to bring in top-tier attacking reinforcements first. If Pep Guardiola’s squad is bolstered in those positions, the door for Foden might open a crack.
His numbers last season were solid rather than spectacular: 10 goals and 7 assists across 50 matches. Yet the headline figures tell only part of the story. Foden’s influence waned in the final months of the campaign, his form tailing off just as City’s season reached its decisive phase. That dip has inevitably raised questions about his role and future minutes in a squad stacked with attacking talent.
For Milan, a player of Foden’s technical level and versatility would instantly elevate the frontline. He fits the profile Amorim wants, offering creativity between the lines, the ability to operate off either flank, and the quality to decide big games. The cost, though, would push this from ambitious to audacious.
Young Targets Getting Away
While the big names dominate the headlines, Milan’s recruitment team has also been working the younger market – with mixed results.
The club have been trailing Borussia Dortmund in the race for Konstantinos Karetsas, a highly regarded talent whose development curve has caught the eye of several European giants. At the same time, they find themselves behind Atalanta in the pursuit of Kerim Alajbegovic, another youngster seen as a long-term investment rather than an immediate starter.
These near-misses underline the competitive reality Milan face. They are shopping in multiple aisles at once: opportunistic deals like Zaniolo, top-shelf dreams like Foden, and developmental prospects such as Karetsas and Alajbegovic. Not all of them will land.
The question now is simple and sharp: in a market full of moving parts, will Milan seize the moment with Zaniolo, stretch for the luxury of Foden, or watch as another summer reshapes their attack without a marquee addition?
