Mudryk's Loan Move: Chelsea Winger's Path to Recovery

Chelsea are preparing to send Mykhailo Mudryk out on loan as the winger tries to relaunch a career stalled for almost two years by a doping ban.

The 25-year-old has not played a competitive match since November 2024, his momentum halted by a four-year suspension after an adverse finding for the banned substance meldonium. An agreement has since been reached to resolve the case, clearing the way for his return, but the gap is brutal in footballing terms: 20 months without the real thing.

Chelsea have eased him back in. Mudryk has featured off the bench in pre-season friendlies against Juventus, AC Milan and Johor Darul Ta'zim on the club’s tour of Asia, brief cameos designed more to feel grass under his boots again than to make headlines.

By the end of that tour, the conversations turned serious. In meetings with the club hierarchy, Mudryk agreed that a loan move before the 1 September transfer deadline would be the best route to rebuild his fitness and rhythm at senior level. Chelsea are now actively exploring options.

One proposal sits close to home. Strasbourg, part of the same BlueCo ownership group as Chelsea, have been put forward as a logical destination: a controlled environment, aligned interests, and guaranteed attention on his development. For the club, it makes sense.

For the player, the picture is different.

Mudryk is understood to favour a move to another English top-flight side, a stage he believes will accelerate his return to the sharp end of the game and keep him in the Premier League spotlight. That preference has opened the door to discussions with other clubs, and interest is not limited to England. Several leading Italian sides have also emerged as possible suitors, sensing an opportunity to revive the career of a winger who once carried a £61m price tag and the weight of huge expectation.

Chelsea, for their part, remain heavily invested. Mudryk is under contract at Stamford Bridge until 2031, a long-term commitment that underlines how much they still have riding on his recovery. He arrived from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2023 as one of the most eye-catching signings of the new ownership era, a raw but explosive wide player expected to grow into a star.

Now the project enters a different phase. This is no longer about potential and projection; it is about rebuilding a footballer who has lost almost two seasons of his prime.

The next move will be decisive. England or abroad. Familiar intensity or a fresh start. Whatever the choice, Mudryk’s loan spell will not simply be a change of shirt – it will be the test of whether Chelsea’s long bet on him can still pay off.
