Nets Fall Short in OT Thriller Against Celtics, 125-124
The Brooklyn Nets almost captured their first win of the season in a game that swung back and forth before slipping away in overtime against the Boston Celtics, 125-124. It was a night filled with promise and frustration, especially with rookie Mikel Brown Jr. leading critical moments.
Starting Lineup Changes and Early Energy
The Nets switched things up by starting Nolan Traoré at point guard for the first time this season. Traoré came out confident, making his first four shots and scoring nine points in the opening quarter, even leaving Jayson Tatum behind on one drive. Day Ron Sharpe also boosted Brooklyn’s defense early on with active hands and pressure, stifling the Celtics' possessions.
Celtics Struggle From Deep Early On
Boston, playing the second half of a back-to-back, looked off at first. Known as the best three-point shooting team, they went just 2-of-15 from beyond the arc in the first quarter, frequently falling short on attempts. Brooklyn's Mo Wagner and Chaney Johnson contributed significantly, combining for 23 points on 8-of-9 shooting in the first half. The Nets controlled much of the game early but couldn’t contain Tatum, who scored a game-high 16 points and had four assists by halftime. Still, Brooklyn led by five at the break.
Third Quarter Shift and Traoré’s Cramping
Traoré kept attacking in the third, showing one of his best drives of the season. But the Celtics began to heat up, shooting 8-of-14 from three-point range and taking the lead with just over a minute left in the period. Traoré had to leave briefly due to cramping, confirmed by coach Jordi Fernández after the game. He finished with 15 points and three assists on 6-of-9 shooting. Day Ron Sharpe’s fourth foul around this time didn’t help the Nets either, as defensive efforts faltered and turnovers piled up.
Final Quarter Push and Dramatic Finish
The Nets' young guards, Michael Porter Jr. and Mikel Brown Jr., combined for 25 points in the fourth quarter, hitting seven of eleven shots from deep. After trailing by eight, Brooklyn tied the game six times and took the lead twice in a back-and-forth stretch. With under a minute left, Brown Jr. hit a tough layup to tie the game. Boston’s White responded with an and-one to regain the lead, followed by clutch free throws from Tatum.
Nehemias Queta fouled Randle at the line, giving Boston a chance to extend the lead to five. Randle made one free throw but missed the second; Mitchell Robinson grabbed the rebound but missed both free throws on the ensuing possession. Brown Jr. nailed a three-pointer with three seconds left to send the game into overtime.
Overtime Drama and Final Seconds
In OT, Randle scored four quick points to give Brooklyn an early edge, with Porter Jr. blocking two shots. Brown Jr. continued shooting threes but missed most of them. Boston capitalized, and Paul George’s free throws cut the lead to one. With 28 seconds remaining, Brown Jr. attempted to close the game but missed a crucial shot. A controversial offensive foul call on Sharpe was overturned after a challenge, leaving the Nets with possession and six seconds to play.
Brown Jr. took a shot under the basket but missed. The Celtics secured the rebound, called a timeout, and Jayson Tatum worked his way to a game-winning layup as time expired.
"On that layup, Mikel, you want to dribble it out because you want to take more time off the clock and then they'll foul you. Good intentions, but if you go for the layup, you gotta make it," said coach Jordi Fernández. "He’ll learn from it. He was a reason we were there. He showed when the big lights are on, he can perform. Lots of good things."
Brown Jr. summed it up on Twitter, while his father and coach Chris Brown Sr. praised him for owning the moment.
Defensive Mix-Up Cost Nets Late
Fernández admitted the Nets switched defenders on Tatum late, allowing him a better shot than intended. The plan was to keep a bigger defender, Noah Clowney, on Tatum, but a switch led to Tatum creating separation and scoring. Keon contested the shot but couldn’t stop it.
