Newcastle United Close to Signing Nico González from Manchester City
Newcastle United’s long search for a new midfield anchor is edging toward a decisive moment, with talks for Manchester City’s Nico González accelerating as the Sept. 1 deadline looms.
For weeks, the club has been working through options to reshape the middle of the pitch after moves involving Bruno Guimarães and Sandro Tonali, testing the market and weighing profiles. On Tuesday, The Athletic’s David Ornstein revealed that Newcastle had opened negotiations with City over González. Soon after, Fabrizio Romano reported that City were “quite open” to letting the Spaniard leave.
That openness has now turned into something more concrete.
£40m deal on the table
According to Dutchie Bowen, Newcastle and City have reached a verbal agreement for González worth £40 million, with a further £5 million in potential bonuses — roughly €46 million plus €6 million. With the clubs aligned on the fee, Newcastle have already moved on to personal terms with the 24-year-old.
“Newcastle United have reached a verbal agreement with Manchester City for Nico González,” Bowen reported. “Fee £40m + £5m bonuses. NUFC negotiating personal terms W/ 24yo. Deal depends if both parties can reach an agreement.”
If that figure holds, it is the clearest sign yet that Newcastle are in position to close the deal quickly. The path has been smoothed from the City side too: on Friday it emerged that the Premier League champions have already told González he is free to explore a move away.
City’s stance is blunt. With competition fierce in Pep Guardiola’s midfield, González faces another season on the fringes. Newcastle, by contrast, are prepared to offer him a starting role from day one.
Real Madrid wrinkle — or leverage play?
Just as the move appeared to be gathering pace, a late twist surfaced from Spain. CaughtOffside reported that Real Madrid have added González to their shortlist after failing to sign Rodri, with the report claiming the European champions are also weighing up Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton.

On the surface, that sounds like heavyweight competition. But there are major caveats. The report does not indicate that Madrid have contacted City, spoken to González, submitted a bid, or opened any form of formal negotiations. There have been no prior credible links between Madrid and the player.
Right now, it looks more like background noise than a genuine tug-of-war.
With Newcastle already close to an agreement with City on the financial package, the sudden mention of Madrid could just as easily be a bargaining chip — a way to nudge up the fee or improve the player’s personal terms — rather than a sign of an imminent bid from the Bernabéu.
Decision time for González
The final obstacle is straightforward: González has to say yes.
City have made their position clear. The former La Masia prospect is staring at another season largely spent on the bench if he stays at the Etihad. At Newcastle, he would walk into a project built around giving him responsibility and minutes, with a starting place in the XI there for him from the outset.
For a 24-year-old still trying to turn promise into permanent status at the top level, that contrast is stark.
Newcastle have moved the negotiations to the brink. The fee is in place, the green light from City has been given, and the personal terms talks are under way. Now it comes down to whether González chooses guaranteed opportunity on Tyneside over waiting for a late twist that may never come.
