Nico Elvedi Debuts for Leeds United in Carabao Cup Win
Nico Elvedi walked off at full-time with the look of a man who had just ticked off an important first box. New club, first game, knockout football. Job done.
Leeds United’s summer signing made his debut in the Carabao Cup second-round win over Nottingham Forest and came away with exactly what any defender wants from a first outing: a victory, a test, and the feeling he belongs.
“It was great. I'm proud of this team after that performance. We deserved this win, but it was a very strong performance from the home team as well. I'm happy we are going through to the next stage,” Elvedi said, reflecting on a night that asked serious questions of him straight away.
Forest leaned on the power and nous of Chris Wood, and Elvedi was thrown straight into the battle.
“My performance was OK. I had a hard battle with Chris Wood which wasn't easy. I like it when the player I'm marking is strong, and I think I did well. There are still things for me to improve but, for my first game of the season, it was OK.”
No easing-in period, no gentle introduction. A physical Premier League striker, a cup tie with an edge, and a new back line to marshal. Exactly the kind of examination Leeds signed him for.
Off the pitch, the transition has been smoother than the fixture list suggests. The Swiss defender spoke with genuine warmth about the environment he has walked into at Elland Road.
“I'm so happy to be here. I have some great new team-mates, so it was very easy to come to this club. Every day is fun coming into the training sessions and playing on the pitch with these good players.”
That sense of ease matters when you have just closed the door on more than a decade at one club. Elvedi’s move to Leeds ended an 11-year chapter at Borussia Monchengladbach, a place that shaped his career and his life.
“It was hard because that club was my family. I had a lot of good memories there, but this is a new step in my career so I'm happy to be here.”
From a long-standing fixture in the Bundesliga to a fresh challenge in England, Elvedi has made his first statement in a Leeds shirt. The cup tie at Forest was only a beginning, but it already hints at a defender ready to carry his experience into a new era and a new league.
