Northern Ireland Squad Update: Youth and Experience for Nations League

Northern Ireland boss Michael O'Neill has doubled down on youth and experience for a demanding Nations League window, keeping faith with teenage prospects Ceadach O'Neill and Braiden Graham while restoring a core of senior regulars to his squad.

The Arsenal midfielder and Everton forward, both teenagers, retain their places after first breaking into the senior set-up for June friendlies against Guinea and France. Ceadach O'Neill, 18, featured in both of those games and has clearly done enough to convince the manager he belongs at this level.

Returning Experience

Experience, though, is coming back in force.

Defenders Dan Ballard, Paddy McNair, Terry Devlin and Eoin Toal all return after missing the June fixtures, bolstering a back line that will be heavily tested across four matches in just 11 days. The spine of the side looks stronger again with goalkeepers Bailey Peacock-Farrell and Conor Hazard recalled, along with striker Dion Charles, who also sat out the summer games.

There is another chance too for Michael Forbes. The Dundee United defender, capped once before against Finland in 2023, is back in the group and pushing for more minutes.

Injury Concerns

Not everyone is returning, though. Liverpool full-back Conor Bradley, sidelined since January following knee surgery, remains out. He is joined on the injury list by Preston North End midfielder Ali McCann and Aberdeen’s Brad Lyons, leaving O’Neill without three energetic options who would all have been strong contenders for starting roles.

Upcoming Schedule

The schedule offers no room to breathe. After earning promotion from the third tier last year, Northern Ireland open their 2026 Nations League B campaign away to Georgia on 25 September and close the window at home to the same opponents on 5 October. Between those two meetings with Georgia, they host Hungary in Belfast and face Ukraine in Slovakia.

Four games. Eleven days. No margin for a thin squad.

O’Neill has reacted accordingly, naming 28 players this time after selecting just 23 for the June window. He has also put extra cover on alert, with goalkeepers Luke Southwood and Josh Clarke, plus striker Jamie Reid, on standby if the intensity of the schedule bites even before the first ball is kicked.
