Patrick Vieira's Warning to Portugal About Cristiano Ronaldo's Legacy
Patrick Vieira believes Cristiano Ronaldo is edging into dangerous territory with his legacy and has urged Portugal boss Roberto Martinez to be ruthless enough to drop his captain.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, the former France midfielder argued that Portugal can no longer be built around the 39-year-old forward, who failed to score in the 1-1 draw with DR Congo at the FIFA World Cup.
For Vieira, sentiment cannot outweigh selection.
“He has to think about the team first before thinking about Ronaldo,” the Arsenal great said, pushing Martinez to make what he called a “really strong decision” ahead of Portugal’s next World Cup clash against Uzbekistan next week. In Vieira’s view, that decision may mean leaving one of the game’s greatest goalscorers out of the starting XI if the side functions better without him.
The concern runs deeper than just one group-stage performance. Vieira fears the sight of Ronaldo struggling, or reacting badly to being substituted, risks staining what has been one of football’s defining careers.
“I worry for him, his legacy will be spoiled a little bit if he kicks off and he gets taken off, because for two decades he has been an extraordinarily wonderful footballer,” Vieira said.
It is a stark warning from a man who knows the weight of an international shirt and the brutality of tournament football: Portugal’s future, he suggests, might now demand a harder conversation about its most famous player.
