Plymouth Argyle's Ambitious Trip to Blackpool

Plymouth Argyle head to the Fylde coast this afternoon with momentum, miles and ambition all piling up.

Three wins from their last four have quietly shifted the mood at Home Park. Bradford City were brushed aside 2-0, Barnsley dismantled 3-0, and a breathless 3-2 victory at Doncaster Rovers on September 5 underlined that this Argyle side can travel and still carry a threat.

Now comes one of the real hauls of their League One campaign. Bloomfield Road, Blackpool, the north-west seaside. A 642-mile round trip from Plymouth, the second-longest journey they will make all season. Only the trek to Bradford in early February will take them further, and even then only by a fraction.

It is the kind of trip that tests a squad’s focus as much as its legs. Argyle arrive in better shape than most making that journey, sitting four places and two points above their hosts in the table.

Blackpool, under Ian Evatt, have started the season in fits and bursts. Two wins, two draws, two defeats: their record screams inconsistency. They sit 10th in League One, dangerous but unpredictable, capable of sharp attacking spells but still searching for a settled rhythm.

Last weekend summed them up. Twice they led at Bloomfield Road against Bromley, through Albie Morgan and Tom Bloxham. Twice they let that lead slip, the game finishing 2-2 and leaving a sense of opportunity missed.

Argyle will see that as an opening. A long road, a lively seaside ground, a home side still working out exactly what it is. For a team starting to trust its own form, it feels like the sort of day that can say a lot about where their season is heading.
