Rafa Marquez to Lead Mexico After 2026 World Cup

Mexico's run in the 2026 World Cup ended with a loss to England, marking the conclusion of Javier Aguirre's third term as the national team manager. Aguirre will step down, and his assistant, Rafa Marquez, will take over as head coach.

Rafa Marquez is a legendary figure in Mexican soccer, having earned 147 caps for El Tri and winning numerous titles in European leagues. Since summer 2024, he has been preparing for this role, leaving behind his coaching education at Barcelona to join the national team setup. Marquez won the UEFA Champions League twice and La Liga four times as a player with Barcelona.

Duilio Davino, Mexico’s sporting director and former defender, confirmed before the World Cup that Marquez has already signed on along with most of his coaching staff.

From Player to Coach

After retiring with Atlas, the club where he began his career, Marquez became its sporting president. He then pursued coaching in Spain and led Barcelona Athletic (the B team) starting in 2022. Though he extended his contract after one season, he left when the national team called.

During his playing days, Marquez operated as a center back and defensive midfielder. He worked under notable coaches like Pep Guardiola, Didier Deschamps, and Ricardo La Volpe. Fans hope Marquez will bring a more dynamic approach than Aguirre’s traditionally conservative style. Aguirre, who is expected to retire at 67, leaves big shoes to fill.

Young Talent Offers Hope

Despite being knocked out in the round of 16, Mexico’s future looks promising. Seventeen-year-old midfielder Gilberto Mora made history as the youngest player since Pelé to start a knockout match. Mora is among five players under 24 on the current roster.

Other rising stars include Mora’s former U-20 teammate Obed Vargas, preparing for his first full season with Atlético Madrid; Mateo Chavez, who scored against Czechia; and Liga MX’s top scorer Armando “Hormiga” Gonzalez, attracting attention from European clubs.

Rafa Marquez aims to nurture this young talent while collaborating with Liga MX owners to boost development within the league.

Upcoming Challenges

At 47 years old, Marquez’s initial assignment as head coach will be guiding Mexico through the Concacaf Nations League. The draw is scheduled for July 23, with the first matches beginning on September 21.
