Raheem Sterling Charged with Dangerous Driving and Nitrous Oxide Possession

Raheem Sterling has been charged with dangerous driving and possession of nitrous oxide after crashing his car in Hampshire in May.

Police confirmed the former England winger faces three offences stemming from a single-vehicle collision on the M3 southbound, close to the Minley Interchange, on 28 May 2026. The car involved was a Lamborghini.

No other vehicles were caught up in the incident and no injuries were reported.

"A driver will appear in court next month to face charges following a collision on the M3," a Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary spokesman told BBC News. Police then named the driver as Raheem Sterling, 31, from Berkshire.

Sterling has been charged with dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation, and failing to provide a specimen. He is due to appear at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court on 15 September.

The case arrives at a crossroads moment in his career. Sterling has been without a club since leaving Dutch side Feyenoord at the end of last season, a free agent after a journey that has already taken him through some of English football’s biggest dressing rooms.

At his peak, Sterling was a central figure for the national team. He earned 82 caps for England and scored 20 goals, playing a major role in the run to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and the Euro 2020 final.

Domestically, he has worn the shirts of Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal, a career path that underlined his status as one of the most sought-after wingers of his generation.

Now, instead of transfer talk, the next date in his diary is in a magistrates’ court.
