Real Madrid’s summer is already noisy. It might be about to get louder.

Journalist Juanma Rodriguez, speaking on the club’s transfer plans, insists Madrid are still lining up three more additions before the window shuts – including a centre-back and a midfielder.

That’s not a tweak. That’s phase two.

Six in already – and still not enough

The early business was aggressive. Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konaté and Denzel Dumfries arrived before the World Cup, giving the squad a harder, more experienced edge on both flanks and through the spine. Carlos Espi and Yan Diomande have since stepped up to the first-team setup, deepening the options at Mourinho’s disposal.

On paper, it looks like a complete overhaul. In practice, it reads more like a foundation.

Rodriguez, relayed by Defensa Central, lifted the lid on the next steps: “There will be more moves, from what I'm told. I understand there will be three signings. One of them is a centre-back and another a midfielder. I mean, beyond what has already been signed.”

So even after six arrivals, Madrid are still hunting. The scale of this summer is larger than the headline number suggests.

Mourinho’s blueprint: steel at the back, order in midfield

This is Mourinho’s squad now, and the transfer strategy reflects his demands. From the moment he walked into Valdebebas, he underlined two needs: another centre-back capable of starting, and a positional midfielder to lock the team together.

The centre-back search is not just about numbers. Mourinho wants genuine competition for a starting place, not a body to fill the bench. The push for greater depth at the back has become more urgent as the Portuguese coach looks to avoid a season where one injury tilts the entire defensive structure.

In midfield, the profile is specific. Mourinho is chasing a player who can sit, read danger, and protect the defence – someone who brings balance rather than chaos, structure rather than improvisation. That kind of anchor has been one of his non-negotiables since day one.

Bastoni high on the list – but one must leave

At centre-back, one name keeps resurfacing: Alessandro Bastoni.

The Italian defender is understood to be one of Mourinho’s preferred targets, a player who fits the idea of a left-footed, composed, high-level option who can walk into big games without blinking. But there’s a catch. His arrival would depend on Raul Asencio leaving Real Madrid first.

Asencio is not part of Mourinho’s plans. His situation could trigger a chain reaction in the heart of defence: a departure to clear a spot, then a major signing to fill it. Until that move materialises, Bastoni remains a strong idea rather than a done deal.

Midfield search wide open

The midfield picture is less defined but just as active. Real Madrid are monitoring several options, with Adam Wharton and Kees Smit among the names under consideration as the club looks for the right profile.

This is not a scattergun chase. The brief is clear: a disciplined midfielder who can operate positionally, hold his zone, and give the team a platform in and out of possession. Wharton and Smit fit elements of that description, but whether either becomes the final choice is still uncertain.

What is certain is the intent. Madrid’s search for another midfielder is ongoing, and it is not cosmetic. It’s central to how Mourinho wants this team to function.
