Rio Ferdinand Questions Manchester United's Attack After Hull Defeat

Rio Ferdinand has questioned whether Manchester United have left themselves short of firepower after their shock defeat to Hull City – and wonders if the money has already run out.

The former United defender, speaking on his YouTube channel after the loss, turned the spotlight on the club’s transfer priorities under Michael Carrick. United have poured resources into reshaping their midfield, but Ferdinand is not convinced the same ambition has been shown up front.

“The big question is, does United’s budget stretch to go and get an Ollie Watkins or someone like that now?” he asked, throwing down a challenge to the club’s recruitment team.

Watkins has become one of the Premier League’s most reliable forwards since joining Aston Villa from Brentford in 2020, racking up 108 goals in all competitions. That kind of output is exactly what Ferdinand believes United are missing, particularly after a summer that has seen the club focus elsewhere.

United have reinforced the middle of the pitch with Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba all arriving, signalling a clear attempt to control games better. But while the engine room has been upgraded, the frontline still feels like an unfinished job.

That sense was only heightened at Hull. £73m striker Benjamin Sesko, the club’s marquee attacking signing, started on the bench. Matheus Cunha got the nod to lead the line instead, a decision that immediately invited scrutiny once the result went against them.

For Ferdinand, it fed into a broader frustration about missed opportunities in the market – including one he feels should have been straightforward. He was particularly unhappy with how Danny Welbeck ended up at Stamford Bridge.

“If Danny Welbeck was on the market, and he clearly was, that’s one who Man United should have gone for because he could still have had an important role to play despite being happy to be on the bench at this stage of his career,” Ferdinand said.

In his eyes, Welbeck would have offered experience, flexibility and depth, all without demanding a guaranteed starting role. Instead, United watched a player with strong Old Trafford roots head to a direct rival.

The debate circles back to Sesko. United have invested heavily in the 21-year-old and Ferdinand believes his role cannot be peripheral if this season is to move in the right direction.

“The importance of Benjamin Sesko is huge, especially going to a place like that. You need him in the team and I’m interested to see how he does this season in that sense,” he insisted.
