Roberto Martinez Addresses Euro 2024 Speculation on Antonio Silva

Roberto Martinez has moved to shut down lingering whispers from Euro 2024, insisting there are no disciplinary shadows hanging over Antonio Silva.

Speaking to Portuguese newspaper Record, the Portugal head coach addressed speculation that an incident during the tournament in Germany had influenced his recent selection calls. He did not tiptoe around it.

"When there's a tournament and information leaks out, it's a very serious situation. At that time, we investigated and it was an accident. It wasn't a lack of discipline," Martinez said, underlining that the matter had been dealt with long ago.

The episode, which emerged during Euro 2024, has since been dragged back into the spotlight as debate rumbles on around the defender’s role with the national team. Martinez, though, drew a clear line between past noise and present decisions.

"It happened at Euro 2024 and that's not part of the decision now. Two years have passed," he stressed. "It happens in group dynamics and it's important to remember the most important thing: it was an accident and not an act of indiscipline. Antonio learned from it, but that's not part of the decision now."

For Martinez, the message is blunt: the file is closed. The conversation has moved on, and so, he insists, has his team.
