Robin Gosens did not walk away from Florence. He was shown the door.
The German full-back has completed a move to Schalke 04, the club he supported as a child, after being abruptly frozen out at Fiorentina despite a contract running to June 2028. The deal is believed to be a loan with an obligation to buy for around €2.5m plus add-ons – a modest fee for a player who, not long ago, was a pillar of Serie A and a European semi-finalist in purple.
The way it ended clearly stung.
From semi-final nights to a shut door
Two years ago, when Gosens arrived in Florence, it felt like a perfect fit: an intense, hard‑running wing-back in a city that adores players who bleed for the shirt. His first season, by his own admission, went “incredibly well.” The second, “incredibly badly.”
Yet even in the bad months, he insists one thing never shifted: he gave everything. On the pitch. Off it. Every day.

For a 32-year-old who has built his career on resilience and work, being cut adrift without a chance to compete was a brutal blow.
He spent recent days training quietly, away from the group, refusing to create chaos, trying to understand how a story that had seemed so rooted in mutual affection could twist so sharply. The decision to exclude him from the squad, he said, “struck me deeply,” because he felt this relationship deserved a different ending.
Bitterness, but no burning of bridges
Gosens chose social media to say goodbye, and the tone was unmistakable: wounded, but dignified.
He made it clear he felt Fiorentina’s hierarchy had not matched the loyalty and identity they so often demand from their players. He spoke of gratitude. For the city that had become home. For the “intense and wonderful time” at the club. For team-mates who became “like brothers,” for kit staff, chefs, waiters, every coach and backroom member who shaped his days in Florence.
He even paused to defend the medical staff, who he felt received too much – and often unjust – criticism last season. It was the message of a player who wanted to be clear: his anger is directed at a decision, not at everyone who wears the badge.
He thanked the fans who made him feel at home from the first minute and gave meaning to his work. He thanked president Rocco Commisso and his family for the chance to wear the shirt. Then he drew a line.
A painful chapter closed, but not with resentment towards the city.
Back where it all began
If there is consolation for Gosens, it lies in the destination.
“Fortunately,” he wrote, his destiny is taking him “right back to the beginning.” Back to Schalke 04. Back to the club where his love for football was born and where the journey to fulfil his dreams first took shape.
At 32, after spending most of his professional life in Italy, from Atalanta to Inter and then Fiorentina, he now returns to Germany carrying experience, scars and a point to prove. Schalke get a seasoned full-back who has lived big European nights and the pressure of demanding fanbases. He gets a chance to rediscover himself in a place that still feels like home.
Fiorentina move on under Grosso, having made a hard, clinical call on a player who once celebrated under the Curva Fiesole on European semi-final nights. Gosens moves on too, but with the clear sense that something in Florence ended before its natural time.
The next time he pulls on a shirt in royal blue, the question will not be whether he still cares. It will be how much that sense of injustice fuels what comes next.
