Roma’s summer search for a marquee winger has reached its first real crossroads. Crysencio Summerville is still the name in bold at the top of the list, but the numbers behind the deal are dragging the club toward a different kind of bet: Mika Godts.
Summerville deal stalls on salary

The problem is no longer the clubs. It’s the contract.
On the player’s side, the salary demands have spiked. Summerville is asking for between €6 million and €7 million net per season, a figure that has immediately cooled Roma’s enthusiasm and complicated a negotiation that, earlier in the week, looked close to an agreement on personal terms.
What seemed like a straight sprint toward the finish line has turned into a negotiation with heavy legs. Roma know that committing to that wage level would reshape their internal hierarchy and future deals. That hesitation has opened the door for a different profile.
Godts, the younger alternative with big numbers
As the Summerville talks drag, sporting director Tony D’Amico has started to lean more seriously on his Plan B. That plan has a name: Mika Godts.
The Belgian winger is no longer just one of several options. He is now the leading alternative, the player whose candidacy is gathering speed as Roma weigh risk against reward.
On the surface, the transfer fee would not save Roma much. Ajax are expected to demand a figure broadly similar to the package being discussed for Summerville. The real difference lies in the wage bill and the long-term upside.
Godts fits comfortably within Roma’s salary structure. At 21, he is four years younger than Summerville and still at the start of his upward curve. The club would be paying for what he is now, but also for what he could become.
His output last season makes that gamble tempting. Across 44 appearances for Ajax, Godts produced 17 goals and 15 assists, a breakout campaign that has not gone unnoticed across Europe. Bayern Munich and Chelsea have both previously been credited with interest, a sign that Roma are not alone in seeing a high-ceiling attacker ready for the next step.
A familiar choice for Roma – and a ticking clock
For Roma, the equation is clear and not unfamiliar: stretch the wage structure for a more finished product, or invest similar transfer money in a younger, higher-upside profile who fits the books more cleanly.
Summerville offers immediate star power and proven output at the top level, but at a cost that would echo through the dressing room and future negotiations. Godts offers flexibility, financial breathing room, and the possibility of a major asset in two or three years’ time.
What Roma cannot do is wait forever.
Gian Piero Gasperini is expecting his key wide man to arrive with enough time to integrate before a Champions League campaign that will demand depth and quality out wide. That urgency now hangs over D’Amico’s decision.
