Schalke, Fiorentina, Sevilla, and Rennes Shine in Dramatic European Night
Rennes hit the summit, Sevilla rise, Fiorentina breathe, and Schalke roar back to life on a dramatic night across Europe.
Schalke surge as referee limps off
Two sides with one point apiece. One of them walked away looking transformed.
Newly promoted Schalke tore into Union Berlin for a 3-1 win, powered by a standout display from Loris Karius and a night that even forced a change of referee.
Robin Gosens set the tone, crashing in an angled volley to give Schalke the lead. Just after the interval, they struck again. Aouchiche, full of confidence, buried a superb finish to make it 2-0 and tilt the entire contest in the visitors’ favour.
From there, it was Karius’ stage. Union pushed, but the Schalke goalkeeper kept them out for most of the second half with a string of assured stops. He finally yielded deep into stoppage time when Tim Skarke pulled one back in the sixth added minute.
Any nerves vanished almost instantly. With virtually the last kick of the game, Maximilian Wober restored the two-goal cushion, sealing a statement win for Schalke and sending their travelling fans into delirium.
The night carried an unusual twist. Early in the second half, referee Timo Gerach signalled a calf problem and could not continue. Fourth official Jarno Wienefeld, an experienced Bundesliga 2 referee, stepped in and completed his first ever top-flight match in charge.
Mastantuono hat trick drags Fiorentina off the floor
In Serie A, two winless sides met with the pressure already building. Fiorentina finally found release.
Venezia struck first. In the 22nd minute, Akor Adams finished calmly with his right foot after neat build-up play from American midfielder Gianluca Busio, and the home crowd sensed a turning point in their own favour.
Franco Mastantuono tore that script up in two devastating minutes.
First, he broke forward in the 29th minute to level. Then, almost straight from the restart, he surged again in the 30th to flip the match on its head and send Fiorentina into halftime with a 2-1 lead.
The visitors never let it go. Midway through the second half, Mateo Pellegrino struck for 3-1, his second goal in as many games, tightening Fiorentina’s grip on the contest. Six minutes from time, Mastantuono completed his hat trick, capping a ruthless individual performance.
Antoine Hainaut’s late goal offered Venezia a sliver of consolation, but the 4-2 defeat left it rooted to the bottom of the 20-team table with no points. Fiorentina climbed to 15th and, at last, had a platform to build on.
Sevilla edge blunt Valencia
It was not pretty in La Liga, but Sevilla will not care.
They climbed into joint second thanks to a late 1-0 win over a Valencia side that barely laid a glove on them.
Chances were scarce and the match drifted for long spells. Then, with nine minutes left, Sevilla finally found a way through. Giorgi Kochorashvili swung in a deep cross from the left and Juan Antonio Iglesias met it, his header looping over the goalkeeper and dropping in.
Valencia never responded. It failed to register a single shot on target and stayed bottom of the table with just one point from a possible 15, a bleak return for a club of its stature.
Sevilla, by contrast, walked off with momentum and a place among the early frontrunners.
Ruthless Rennes punish struggling Marseille
In France, Rennes climbed to the top of Ligue 1 and pushed Marseille deeper into crisis.
The only goal arrived six minutes into the second half. Adrien Thomasson, a recent signing from Lens, struck his first goal for the club to secure a 1-0 victory and a third consecutive league win for the Breton side.
Rennes’ reward was clear: top spot, one point above Monaco.
For Marseille, the picture is far darker. This is its worst start to a league campaign in more than 20 years. A third straight defeat left it marooned in 11th place with just three points, and the questions around the club are only getting louder.
West Ham run riot against Wrexham
In England, West Ham turned the Championship into their own playground.
They demolished Wrexham 6-0, with six different players getting on the scoresheet in a ruthless display that showcased both depth and confidence. The margin of victory propelled West Ham to the top of the table, a point clear of West Bromwich Albion.
