Sunderland Nears £30m Signing of Malick Fofana for Europa League

Sunderland are on the brink of a statement signing, having agreed a deal worth just under £30m for Lyon winger Malick Fofana.

The 21-year-old Belgium forward is travelling to England for a medical and is expected to sign a five-year contract, underlining the club’s commitment to building around young, high-value talent.

The agreement will see Sunderland pay an initial £25.6m, with a further £4.3m potentially due in add-ons. For a club preparing for its first European campaign in 51 years, it is a bold swing at the next level rather than a cautious step.

Fofana is understood to be enthusiastic about the move and the chance to be part of Sunderland’s Europa League adventure. The anticipation around his arrival is sharpened by the context: this is not a player short of suitors.

Arsenal, the reigning Premier League champions, tried to bring him to north London but failed to reach an agreement with Lyon over the fee. Sunderland have gone where Arsenal would not, and that alone sends a message about their intent.

Fofana came through at KAA Gent before earning his move to Ligue 1 with Lyon in 2024. Now, after a short spell in France, he is set to become one of the centrepieces of a rapidly evolving Sunderland squad.

And he will not be the only fresh face.

He is poised to join Kevin Danso at the Stadium of Light, with the Austria defender due to arrive from Tottenham on an initial loan that includes an option to buy. That deal, once completed, will add proven top-flight experience to the back line.

Sunderland have already been busy. Defenders Thomas Meunier and Dayann Methalie, along with midfielder Jules Ahoka, have all signed this summer following the club’s impressive seventh-place finish in their first season back in the top flight.
