Teams Eliminated from FIFA World Cup 2026: Updated List

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, expanded to 48 teams from the previous 32, offers more nations a chance to reach the knockout rounds than ever before. This format adds an extra knockout stage, allowing all but 16 teams to advance beyond the group phase.

Still, some teams have already seen their tournament hopes dashed early. Below is a current list of teams that have been eliminated from the competition.

Early Exits Explained

Haiti, Turkey, Tunisia, and others were among the first knocked out due to new tiebreaker rules FIFA introduced for this World Cup. If teams tie on points, rankings within groups are decided by head-to-head results before considering goal difference or goals scored overall.

For example, Haiti lost narrowly to Scotland and then heavily to Brazil, making it impossible to surpass those teams in Group C even if they matched Scotland's point total. Since Scotland won the direct matchup, Haiti ranks below them.

How FIFA Decides Group Rankings

If two or more teams end group play with the same points, FIFA applies these criteria in order:

  • Head-to-head results between tied teams
  • Goal difference from those matches
  • Goals scored in those matches
  • Overall goal difference in the group
  • Overall goals scored in the group
  • Team conduct score based on yellow and red cards
  • FIFA ranking position

Third-Place Teams Can Still Advance

The tournament allows the eight best third-place finishers to move on to the Round of 32. They are ranked by points, goal difference, goals scored, conduct score, and FIFA ranking.

Expanded Format Brings More Matches

The World Cup’s jump to 48 teams means there are now 12 groups instead of 8, adding more opening games and a round of 32 knockouts. The eventual champions will have played eight matches instead of seven.

We think this expansion gives many underdog teams a better shot at advancing, but the thrill of unexpected eliminations keeps the drama alive.
