Teams Eliminated From FIFA World Cup 2026: Updated List

The 2026 World Cup, held in North America, has already seen several teams bow out earlier than they hoped. With the tournament expanded from 32 to 48 teams, the chance to reach the knockout rounds has grown for most nations. Still, some squads have been knocked out before moving past the group stage.

The expansion adds an extra knockout round, meaning more teams will progress beyond the first phase compared to previous tournaments. However, elimination still stings for those exiting early or falling short in the knockouts, especially favorites expected to advance far.

Confirmed Teams Eliminated So Far

Because the top two in each group plus eight best third-place teams advance, many eliminations won't be final until the last group matches finish. Yet as of June 23, these teams cannot move forward:

Haiti, Turkey, Ghana, and Tunisia were among the earliest teams eliminated, a situation influenced by new tie-breaker rules in the group stage. Now, if teams tie on points, head-to-head results between those teams decide their ranking.

For example, Haiti's losses to Scotland and Brazil capped their possible points at three. Even if they reach three points, they can't surpass Brazil or Morocco in their group and would lose out to Scotland based on their direct match.

Understanding World Cup Group Tie-Breakers

FIFA updated the tie-breaking system this year. When teams finish with equal points, rankings rely first on:

  • Head-to-head results within the tied teams' matches
  • Goal difference in those matches
  • Goals scored in those matches

If still unresolved, it then moves to:

  • Overall goal difference in all group matches
  • Total goals scored in all group matches
  • Team conduct score, calculated from yellow and red cards
  • FIFA world ranking, if needed as a last resort

Third-Place Teams Can Still Advance

One change for 2026 is that eight of the best third-place teams across groups will qualify for the Round of 32. Their ranking depends on:

  • Points earned in the group
  • Goal difference
  • Goals scored
  • Team conduct score
  • FIFA ranking

More Teams, More Matches

The jump from 32 to 48 teams means four additional groups and an extra knockout stage. The champion will now play eight games in total to lift the trophy.
