Thilo Kehrer's Rapid Move to Ajax: A New Chapter
Thilo Kehrer has experienced transfer windows before, but nothing quite like this one. Deadline Day, a whirlwind of calls and negotiations, ended with the German centre-back signing for Ajax – and boarding a plane almost immediately.
“That was a first for me. Very exciting, it was different. I’m happy to be here,” he told ESPN on Friday, still sounding like someone processing how fast his life had just moved.
The move came together in hours, not weeks. Kehrer only learned of Ajax’s interest the day before the deal was done.
“Everything happened very quickly: talks with Jordi (Cruyff), with the coach. After that, the clubs wrapped it up. The next day I was on my way.”
No long saga. No drawn-out drama. Just a straight sprint to Amsterdam.
Convincing Call and a Clear Ambition
Once the first conversations started, the decision didn’t rest on geography or nostalgia, even if there was some of that too. Kehrer knows this part of Europe well from his Schalke days, just across the border in Germany. Ajax, though, had something more important to sell.
He thought it through carefully before saying yes. The club’s ambition tipped the scales.
“The most important thing for me is to be competitive and to play for titles, to have the ambition to win trophies and matches. That is possible here. The foundation is there, now we have to make it work.”
That word – foundation – matters at Ajax. The club still sees itself as a place where a clear identity underpins everything. Kehrer picked up on that almost immediately.
First Impressions: Scale, Stadium, DNA
Fresh from AS Monaco, the defender didn’t need long to feel the size of the club he had joined.
“The scale, the stadium, the atmosphere and the pure football. The club have their own DNA,” he said.
You can hear the checklist of a player who has seen big arenas and big nights, and still finds something distinctive in Amsterdam: the weight of history, the expectation to play on the front foot, the demand to entertain as well as win.
His contract runs until mid-2027. Beyond that, he keeps his options open without closing any doors.
“I don’t know yet. We’ll see how the season goes, but I’m certainly open to it. There are still many matches until next year. We’ll see.”
For now, the focus is simple: settle, compete, and help Ajax turn that “foundation” into silverware.
Familiar Faces, Faster Integration
Kehrer hasn’t walked into a dressing room of strangers. That helps. From Monaco, he already knew Caio Henrique and Simon Adringa.
“It makes it easier when you have familiar faces. They help you integrate. You already have a connection. It was nice to see them again.”
The network stretches further. Soon after the transfer went through, a message popped up from another German in Amsterdam: Marc-André ter Stegen, on loan from FC Barcelona.
“Soon after completing the move, I got a message from Marc-André ter Stegen,” Kehrer explained. He didn’t need a crash course on the club. “I didn’t need to ask much. I already knew Ajax very well. I played for Schalke, not far from here. Everything was already very clear.”
He also knows Marc-André ter Stegen and Julian Brandt from Bundesliga battles and the German national team. The connections are already there; the adaptation should be quicker as a result.
Ajax have signed a defender who wanted a challenge, a club with a clear identity, and a shot at trophies. Kehrer has walked into a team that expects all of that as a minimum.
Now comes the real test: can he turn a frantic Deadline Day into a long-term foothold at the heart of Ajax’s next title push?
