Thomas Müller urges Bayern to sign Johan Manzambi
Thomas Müller has seen enough. From Los Angeles to Bavaria, one performance has sharpened his message to Bayern Munich: do not let Johan Manzambi slip away to Manchester United.
Müller sounds the alarm
While United’s recruitment team scours the globe for midfield reinforcements after Casemiro’s exit and with Manuel Ugarte expected to follow him out, Manzambi was busy turning heads on the other side of the world. Coming off the bench for Switzerland at SoFi Stadium, the 20-year-old scored twice in a 4-1 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, a statement display on the World Cup stage that echoed far beyond LA.
United already have £35m signing Ederson Silva lined up for Old Trafford this summer. They are still pushing for West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes despite Tottenham’s interest, monitoring Real Madrid’s stance as Aurelien Tchouameni edges closer to the market, and have been linked in Italy with Croatia and Como talent Martin Baturina after his eye-catching goal against England.
Yet it is Manzambi who has jolted Müller into action.
The Freiburg midfielder, one of the Bundesliga side’s standout performers last season with five goals and four assists, has long been on the radar of major clubs. TEAMtalk sources flagged United’s interest as far back as March, with Arsenal also in the conversation. Now, as the race tightens, Bayern’s legendary forward wants his old club at the front of the queue.
“He’s a good player overall. We’ve had him on our list for a while now,” Müller told MagentaTV, making his stance unmistakably clear. “For me, he’s someone, and now we can make a headline, that FC Bayern should also consider.”
A modern midfielder built for the top
Müller did not stop at polite praise. He dissected what makes Manzambi such a compelling target for an elite club.
“You can sense his flexibility. You can also sense his carefree attitude. At the same time, you can already see a certain maturity in his actions, in his decision-making, his work ethic,” he said. “He’s now in Freiburg in a team where they really work hard. I think his development is very, very good.”
That blend is exactly what Europe’s heavyweights crave: a midfielder who can handle the graft and the glamour. Manzambi’s numbers in Germany back that up, but his versatility is what really excites Müller.
“He’s a player who can play as No.6, he can play as No.8, he can play as No.10. He wears number nine on his back, so maybe we could also market him as a striker!”
It was a line delivered with a smile, but the message behind it was serious. In a market where multi-functional midfielders command a premium, Manzambi is fast becoming one of the most intriguing options available.
United circling, Bayern warned
From United’s perspective, the profile fits. A 20-year-old with World Cup goals, Bundesliga experience, and the ability to operate across the midfield line, all while reinforcing a department in flux. With Ederson Silva arriving, Fernandes pursued, and Tchouameni monitored, Manzambi would add yet another dimension to Michael Carrick’s evolving engine room.
Arsenal have also been tracking him, sensing an opportunity to secure a long-term piece for their midfield rotation. Interest from several clubs is already in place ahead of the summer window, and performances like the one in LA will only intensify the scramble.
Müller, who lifted 33 trophies in Bayern colours and understands better than most how quickly top talent can be lost to rivals, is effectively telling the club’s hierarchy: act now.
Manzambi’s moment
For Manzambi himself, this World Cup brace felt like a personal breakthrough.
“Honestly, it’s incredible, it’s the first brace of my career, and at the World Cup on top of that,” he said after Switzerland’s win. “Scoring two goals in front of the fans and my family, that’s very, very nice. I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep tonight.”
Those are the words of a player still absorbing the scale of his own rise, yet already playing with the composure Müller highlighted. Freiburg have given him the platform, the World Cup has given him the spotlight, and now the giants are circling.
United’s scouts were already watching. Arsenal’s interest is on record. Bayern have had him “on their list for a while.”
The difference now? One of the most decorated players in Bayern’s history has gone public with his plea. The question is whether the club listens before Old Trafford – or another European heavyweight – makes the first decisive move.
