Tottenham Secures £85m Mateus Fernandes Deal Over United

Tottenham have thrown down one of the biggest markers of the summer window, agreeing an £85m deal with West Ham for Portugal midfielder Mateus Fernandes and edging out Manchester United in the process.

No add-ons. No performance clauses. Just a straight, guaranteed £85m. That alone tells you how badly Spurs wanted him.

Spurs get their man

At 21, Fernandes has become the latest centrepiece in Tottenham’s rebuild, identified early as a primary target after an £80m move for Sandro Tonali was knocked back by Newcastle. When that door slammed shut, Spurs didn’t hesitate. They went higher, went harder, and refused to blink.

The competition was real. Manchester United were at the table, talking to Fernandes’ camp and his powerful agent Jorge Mendes. The player kept an open mind, listening to both projects, both promises, both price tags.

In the end, Tottenham were simply willing to go where United would not.

United hold the line – again

United’s stance has been consistent: they will only buy at what they believe is the right valuation. They liked Fernandes. They tracked him. But they would not follow Spurs to £85m without add-ons, convinced that discipline in the market served them well last season when patience, in their view, brought the right players at the right prices.

There was another concern at Old Trafford. Decision-makers were not fully convinced Fernandes truly wanted to play for United. When a fee climbs that high, any doubt about the player’s desire becomes a red flag.

So they stepped back. Spurs stepped in.

Midfield remains the priority at Old Trafford

The Fernandes setback does not change United’s main objective. Central midfield remains the priority, and a £35m deal is already in place with Atalanta for Ederson. His arrival, though, is on hold after a late call-up to Brazil’s World Cup squad, leaving United waiting while pre-season edges closer.

United’s players are due back for pre-season training on 9 July. As it stands, Michael Carrick’s squad looks almost identical to the one that finished last season. Apart from out-of-contract pair Casemiro and Tyrell Malacia, there have been no major exits, no new faces through the door, and no sense yet of a radical overhaul.

Plans have had to change elsewhere too. The intention to sell Manuel Ugarte has been shelved after his serious injury on World Cup duty with Uruguay, removing one potential source of funds and forcing a rethink in midfield rotation.

Up front, Netherlands striker Joshua Zirkzee remains at the club, despite the usual summer noise around his future. Inside Old Trafford, sources have also played down rumours of a Mason Mount departure, insisting there is no push to move the midfielder on.

A statement from Spurs, a test for United

So Tottenham emerge from this battle with a marquee signing and a clear message: they are prepared to pay elite prices for elite-age talent. United, by contrast, walk away with their principles intact but their midfield still short of the reinforcement they wanted.

One club has paid top dollar to accelerate their project. The other is betting that restraint, once again, will be rewarded when the window closes.
