Union Berlin Backs New Head Coach Marie-Louise Eta Amid Criticism

Union Berlin have drawn a firm line in the sand. In the wake of Marie-Louise Eta’s promotion to head coach, the club’s hierarchy has not only backed her, it has gone on the offensive against the criticism surrounding her appointment.

According to the club’s Union director, the debate says far more about outdated attitudes in football than it does about Eta’s suitability for the job.

He made it clear that, inside Union, there is no debate at all.

“I personally haven’t spoken with [Marie-Louise] about it yet,” he said on the club’s official channels. “I’ve noticed it, but I also refuse to read or even just expose myself to that kind of nonsense, because for me, this is about quality—leadership quality. We have 100 percent confidence in Loui, complete conviction.”

That conviction is not framed as a brave experiment or a gesture. It is presented as the logical consequence of her work.

“I find it insane that we have to deal with this in this day and age. We’re talking about a highly competent leader here, and you can be sure that everyone here at Union, whether in the stands or within the club itself, stands 100 percent behind this decision and will do everything in their power to ensure that this doesn’t lead to any further discussion in the future. It’s just embarrassing.”

A decisive break after Heidenheim

Eta’s step up comes on the back of a brutal assessment of Union’s recent form. The club parted ways with Steffen Baumgart after a poor performance against Heidenheim, a display that convinced the board they could not wait any longer.

“The decisive factor was essentially the team’s performance in Heidenheim, which led us to make the decision that evening,” the director explained. The reaction was swift. “Of course, we then contacted Marie-Louise and presented our idea to her. She was immediately willing and was very pleased about the trust we’re showing in her.”

Union did not need to look far. Eta has already been working inside the club structure and has already carried the pressure of being a head coach.

She made her mark with the U-19s, where she led from the front and, crucially, learned the rhythms of the job.

“She had a great run with the U-19s team, so she’s already fulfilled a role as head coach and is experienced. Another advantage, of course, is that we all know her and she knows us. She doesn’t need to be shown the ropes here – she knows it all. She knows the stadium, the atmosphere, the people, and above all, the players.”

In a sport that often talks about continuity but rarely lives it, Union are betting on familiarity and proven authority over outside noise.

“And we’re convinced that a head coach can only truly be a head coach if they’ve held that role before, which is why she is the logical next step.”

Union have made their choice. The question now is not whether Marie-Louise Eta belongs on the touchline, but how far she can take a club determined to stand with her, not just in principle, but in practice.
