Vincent Kompany Collapses During Bayern Munich Training
Vincent Kompany has been admitted to hospital after collapsing during a Bayern Munich training session on Friday, raising serious concern over the health of the club’s head coach in the middle of a pivotal week in their season.
The 40-year-old, who has been battling a viral infection affecting his legs, went down while observing a session involving Bayern’s second team. The club confirmed he required immediate medical attention.
Bayern said in a statement: “Vincent Kompany had to seek medical treatment on Friday after collapsing during training for FC Bayern's amateurs. The first-team coach had been watching the second team's session. Kompany will undergo thorough examination in the hospital and remain in medical care. For the time being, his coaching staff will manage training and match operations.”
Kompany’s condition had already been a concern inside the club. In the build-up to Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Arsenal, he was visibly struggling, at one point needing assistance to get up stairs. He missed the pre-match press conference, a rare absence for a Bayern manager on such a stage, though he did make it to the touchline for the 2-2 draw at the Allianz Arena.
Even before the collapse, his physical state had been plain to see. During Bayern’s 6-1 demolition of Leipzig in the Bundesliga on Saturday, Kompany cut an unusually subdued figure. He stayed seated for long stretches, far from the animated presence that has quickly become his touchline trademark in Munich.
He then spent the day at home ahead of the Arsenal game, with assistant coach Aaron Danks hinting that the Belgian might need longer to shake off the virus. The latest development has only intensified those concerns.
Inside the club, the message is clear: football can wait.
Bayern sporting director Max Eberl underlined that stance, saying: “The health of Vincent Kompany is our utmost priority. At FC Bayern, we will do everything to ensure he recovers quickly. Vinnie is receiving all necessary medical care and support, as well as all the time he needs. His coaching team, which we fully trust, will take over his duties. All of us at FC Bayern wish Vinnie a speedy recovery.”
For now, his assistants will run training and handle matchday responsibilities, with Bayern still unsure whether Kompany will be fit enough to return to the dugout for Sunday’s Bundesliga fixture against Freiburg.
A club accustomed to dealing with pressure on the pitch now faces a very different kind of test: navigating a crucial phase of the campaign while its manager fights to regain his health.
