Vincent Kompany Collapses During Bayern Training Session
Vincent Kompany is undergoing hospital tests after collapsing during a Bayern Munich training session on Friday, throwing an unexpected shadow over the Bundesliga leaders’ preparations for the weekend.
The Bayern head coach, who has been battling a virus in recent days, was watching a session involving the club’s reserve team when he suddenly felt unwell and required immediate medical attention.
Bayern confirmed the incident in a statement on their website, explaining that Kompany “required medical attention after collapsing during a training session for Bayern’s reserve team. The head coach of the professional squad had been observing the second team’s session.
“Kompany is currently undergoing a thorough examination in the hospital and will remain under medical care. For the time being, his coaching staff will manage all training and match-related operations.“
The 38-year-old had already pushed himself through a demanding week. Despite the viral infection, he took his place on the bench on Wednesday night as Bayern drew 2-2 at home against Arsenal in the Champions League, a result that kept the German champions on edge in Europe but maintained their momentum domestically.
Now the focus inside the club has shifted sharply from tactics and selection to the health of their coach.
Max Eberl, Bayern’s board member for sport, underlined that shift in tone. “Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority. At Bayern, we will do everything we can to ensure he makes a speedy recovery.
“Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and he will be given as much time as he needs. Everyone at FC Bayern wishes Vinnie a quick recovery.”
Bayern are due to travel to Freiburg on Sunday, a fixture that suddenly feels secondary. The squad will be led in the short term by Kompany’s coaching staff while the Belgian remains under observation, with the club waiting on clarity from doctors before any decisions about his return are made.
For a coach who has built a reputation on resilience and authority on the touchline, the sight of Kompany stepping away from the action is a jarring one. Bayern, usually defined by control and planning, must now adapt at short notice and rally around their manager as he fights a very different kind of battle.
