Warrington Rylands Suffer Heavy Defeat but Manager Remains Calm
Neil Reynolds refuses to hit the panic button – even after watching his Warrington Rylands side suffer their heaviest defeat since joining the Northern Premier League.
Rylands were thrashed 5-0 at home by Redcar Athletic on Saturday, a bruising afternoon that left them with three defeats from their opening five games of the season. For a side with promotion ambitions, it was a jolt. For Reynolds, it was something else: a horrible sense of déjà vu.
Manager stands firm after “horrendous off day”
This was Reynolds’ first game back in the dugout after a four-match touchline ban. Instead of raging or threatening sweeping changes, he chose to lean on experience and memory.
"When people watch this interview, I don't want them to think I've lost my marbles but we just had an off day," he told the club’s YouTube channel.
There was no public naming and shaming, no hint of a clear-out.
"There's nobody in my dressing room that needs to worry about being replaced or me calling them out.
"We had a horrendous off day and we all know that but as I've said to the lads, there's nothing we can do about it now. As a team – staff and players – we've had a bad day at the office."
The language was blunt. The message was calm. One bad day, not a broken team.
Lessons from Prescot
Reynolds quickly reached back to a key moment last season. Around February, Rylands went to Prescot and were beaten 3-0. The scoreline stung. What followed stuck with him.
"Around February-time last season, we went to Prescot and got beat 3-0 and after the game, we stayed in the dressing room. Barring our new players, everyone in that dressing room today was at Prescot that day.
"We had a bit of a conversation with some open and honest words and then went on an unbelievable run and were a penalty kick away from being promoted."
That night at Prescot turned into a pivot point. Reynolds clearly believes this humiliation by Redcar can serve the same purpose.
"If we respond positively – and that's putting a performance in at Workington on Tuesday night and then building on it against Alfreton – then we'll look back on this moment and know how it feels to be that low.
"We've got to learn from that – we've built that side and we've had an off day."
From tight contest to heavy defeat
For 45 minutes, the scoreline did not hint at what was to come. Rylands trailed only 1-0 at the break and were still in the contest. By the midway stage of the second half, the afternoon had collapsed.
Redcar struck three more times in quick succession, then added a late fifth to complete a ruthless job and send the home support home stunned.
"It shouldn't have been that scoreline given where we were at half time but unfortunately, information that we passed on just wasn't retained," Reynolds said.
"We've been beaten by an exceptional side who have come here and done a job on us.
It's going to be a long three days until Tuesday – it's certainly a tough one, but there's no panic."
The response now moves from words to actions. Workington away on Tuesday, Alfreton after that. Rylands have been here before. The question is whether they can turn another “horrendous off day” into the spark for something far bigger.
