West Ham's Castellanos Misses Late Penalty in Defeat to Charlton

West Ham’s Valentin Castellanos crashed a 93rd-minute penalty off target as their rocky return to the Championship took another painful twist with defeat to London rivals Charlton Athletic.

In front of a sell-out 62,500 crowd, the Hammers had the late chance to salvage a point after Conor Coventry was penalised for handball deep into stoppage time. Castellanos stepped up with the stadium holding its breath. He failed to deliver. Charlton’s players punched the air. West Ham’s fans sank back into their seats.

Jones stuns West Ham early

Charlton had landed the first blow long before that late drama.

Barely settled into their shape, West Ham switched off from a long throw by Sonny Carey, allowing the ball to bounce inside their own penalty area. Lloyd Jones, the Addicks’ captain and hero of last weekend’s comeback win over Derby County, reacted quickest.

Back to goal, he improvised brilliantly. An overhead kick, guided rather than thrashed, flew past the helpless goalkeeper to silence most of the stadium and send the away end into chaos.

West Ham, rattled and flat, struggled to turn their possession into anything meaningful. Charlton, compact and disciplined, were happy to let the hosts have the ball and wait for mistakes.

Campbell punishes Mavropanos

The second half brought no immediate change in the pattern. Then West Ham blinked.

Konstantinos Mavropanos hesitated, dithered, and Tyreece Campbell pounced. The Charlton forward robbed him, drove into the box and, with defenders scrambling, opened his body and curled a composed finish into the corner shortly after the interval.

Seven days after sealing Charlton’s win against Derby, Campbell had done it again, doubling the lead and tightening the grip of the 3,000 travelling fans on this London derby.

At 2-0, the mood turned edgy. Boos rippled. West Ham’s players finally responded.

Piroe strikes, but late drama goes begging

From that moment, West Ham took control of the ball and, this time, began to carry a threat. Waves of claret-and-blue pressure pushed Charlton back towards their own box.

The breakthrough came from a debutant. Joel Piroe, sharp and alive in the six-yard area, reacted to a loose ball and stabbed in from close range to drag the hosts back into the contest. Suddenly, the noise returned. Charlton dug in.

Crosses rained in, shots were blocked, and Charlton’s back line threw themselves into everything. The clock ticked past 90 minutes. Then came the twist: a handball call against Coventry inside the area and a lifeline for West Ham.

Castellanos took responsibility. One kick to rescue a point and ease the pressure of a turbulent start. He missed, and with it went West Ham’s escape route.

Charlton walked away with another statement win. West Ham walked off to face the reality of a Championship campaign that is already biting hard.
