Wirtz Absence Forces Liverpool to Reshape Against Chelsea

Anfield expected Florian Wirtz. It got a very different Liverpool instead.

The German playmaker, increasingly central to Arne Slot’s early plans, was nowhere to be seen on the teamsheet for the Premier League clash with Chelsea. No place in the XI. Not even on the bench. For a player who has quietly stacked up 17 goals in 47 games across all competitions, his absence was impossible to ignore.

Slot cut straight to the point before kick-off. Speaking to TNT Sports, he revealed that Wirtz had been battling illness all week and had finally lost the race to be fit.

“He tried everything to be in it. But an infection in the stomach,” the Liverpool head coach said.

Wirtz had attempted to train earlier in the week, Slot added, but his condition deteriorated. By the time the squad went through their final session, the 23-year-old couldn’t join in. The decision was made: he would play no part at Anfield.

For a manager still shaping his Liverpool, it was a significant problem. Wirtz has grown into the Premier League after a testing start, knitting attacks together, drifting into pockets of space, and providing the final pass or finish when it matters. Taking him out of the side meant ripping out a key piece of the attacking puzzle.

So Slot redrew the map.

Without his main creator, he opted for a fluid, mobile support cast behind Cody Gakpo, who led the line as a central striker. Dominik Szoboszlai, Rio Ngumoha and Jeremie Frimpong were tasked with carrying the creative load, rotating positions and driving at Chelsea’s back line. It was less about one conductor and more about shared responsibility, a collective attempt to replace the vision and end product that Wirtz usually brings.

The change underlined just how quickly Wirtz has become important at Liverpool. A few months ago, his adaptation was still a talking point. Now, his absence dictates the entire shape of Slot’s attack.

Liverpool could only hope the illness passes as quickly as their fixtures are coming. With Wirtz’s influence growing and his numbers already stacking up, they will not want to get used to planning big nights at Anfield without him.
