The Round of 32 for the 2026 World Cup is starting to become clear after Matchday 2. Two of the three host nations, United States and Mexico, have secured their group titles and will move on to the knockout phase. Canada sits on four points and faces a key clash against Switzerland to decide the winner of Group B.

A total of 32 teams will advance past the group stage. This includes the top two finishers in each group plus the eight best third-place teams across all groups.

How FIFA Breaks Ties

FIFA uses a multi-step method to resolve ties in the group standings:

  • Step 1: Points earned in head-to-head matches between tied teams; goal difference and goals scored in those matches.
  • Step 2: If still tied, overall goal difference in all group games; total goals scored; team conduct score based on yellow/red cards.
  • Step 3: If no resolution, FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking is used.

Teams Locked Into Round of 32

  • United States: With wins over Paraguay and Australia, the U.S. clinched Group D early and will face a third-place finisher from Group B, E, F, I, or J on July 1 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
  • Mexico: Clean sheets against South Africa and South Korea gave Mexico Group A. They will stay at home to meet a third-place team from Groups C, E, F, H, or I on June 30 at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
  • Germany: Victories over Curaçao and Ivory Coast secured Germany’s spot. After Ecuador and Curaçao drew, Germany took Group E and will play a third-place side from Groups A, B, C, D, or F on June 29 in Boston.
  • Argentina: A win against Austria guaranteed Argentina’s advance. Following Algeria’s win over Jordan, Argentina leads Group J. They will face the runner-up from Group H in Miami on July 3.
  • France and Norway: Both clinched spots with wins on Monday. Their upcoming match on Friday in Boston will determine who tops Group I, affecting their seeding and knockout path.

Teams That Will Not Advance

  • Haiti: Back in the tournament for the first time since 1974, Haiti has yet to claim a win after losses to Scotland and Brazil. Their final group game is Wednesday versus Morocco.
  • Türkiye: Once viewed as a group contender, Türkiye was eliminated following defeats to Australia and Paraguay. They will face the U.S. in a knockout opener in Los Angeles.
