World Cup Day 5 Review and Day 6 Preview

The World Cup continued with an unusual twist on Monday as all four matches ended in draws. Instead of the usual winners and losers, every team left the field sharing points. That might sound dull, but these games had plenty to offer, from Cape Verde's remarkable defensive stand against Spain to the intense and chaotic clash between Iran and New Zealand late into the night.

Spain 0-0 Cape Verde (Group H)

No goals were scored, yet Cape Verde impressed by holding Spain to a stalemate. Despite Spain dominating possession with 74% and outshooting them in expected goals 2.16 to 0.28, Cape Verde’s disciplined defense limited Spain’s chances and committed only one foul all match. This result shakes up Group H and boosts the chances of a Spain vs. Argentina round-of-16 showdown.

Belgium 1-1 Egypt (Group G)

Belgium, not their strongest squad in recent years, struggled against Mohamed Salah’s Egypt. Emam Ashour put Egypt ahead early with a powerful strike. Belgium equalized through an own goal by Egypt’s Hany later in the game. Romelu Lukaku stood out physically and played a key role in creating pressure, but the match remained evenly balanced. Either Belgium or Egypt looks set to top Group G.

Saudi Arabia 1-1 Uruguay (Group H)

This match was physical and rough, featuring plenty of tough tackles and moments where the referee lost control. Saudi Arabia scored first through Al Amri, but Uruguay’s Araújo leveled the score late. Both teams showed grit, though Uruguay didn’t quite perform at their best. With Spain and Cape Verde also drawing, all four teams in Group H now share a point each after one round.

Iran 2-2 New Zealand (Group G)

Perhaps the most entertaining match of the day saw Iran and New Zealand trade goals back and forth. Iranian fans packed SoFi Stadium, cheering on a team that hadn’t played club football recently due to league cancellation. New Zealand’s Elijah Just scored twice, tying him for the Golden Boot lead. Iran managed to come back twice and almost snatched a win late. The game wasn’t pretty, but it was exciting enough to keep fans up late.
