World Cup Players at Risk of Suspension Ahead of Round of 32

As the group stage edges toward its final matches, some top players face the risk of missing the Round of 32 due to yellow card suspensions. While goals and defensive efforts decide who advances, a referee’s caution can abruptly end a player’s tournament run.

Players who have picked up one yellow card so far must avoid another in their last group game. Accumulating two cautions during the group phase leads to a suspension for the next match, which in this case would be the Round of 32. Here’s a look at the rules and which players need to be careful.

How Yellow Cards Are Handled in the 2026 World Cup

The fundamentals remain the same: yellow cards are shown for fouls like repeated reckless challenges, deliberately stopping attacks, wasting time, or simulation. Two yellows in a single game result in a red card and an automatic suspension for the next match. A straight red card also triggers an immediate ban, sometimes longer depending on the offense.

Accumulated yellow cards from separate games lead to a suspension after the second caution. This rule often surprises players during tournaments.

One key change for 2026 is when cards reset. To manage the larger 48-team format, FIFA now wipes all yellow cards clean after the group stage ends and again after the quarterfinals. Previously, cautions carried through to the quarterfinals, meaning a booking in early group matches could affect availability in the last 16.

FIFA introduced new reasons for red cards, including covering the mouth during disputes or leaving the field to protest. VAR can review and overturn some wrongful send-offs such as mistaken second yellows or incorrect reds.

Suspensions Carrying Into the Round of 32

Thanks to the reset at the group stage's conclusion, a single yellow card earlier in the phase does not carry into the Round of 32 alone. The risk comes from receiving a second yellow in the final group match. Two yellows in the group phase equal a one-match ban served during the knockout opener.

Players with one yellow card going into their last group fixture must stay cautious. Any additional booking or a red card there means missing the first knockout game. After the group stage finishes, everyone begins the knockouts without any card counts.

Players One Yellow Card Away From Suspension

The following players had one yellow card after the first two rounds of group matches. A second booking in their final group game would cause them to miss the Round of 32.

*Note: Miguel Almiron was sent off in Paraguay’s second match and will miss their third group game, so his suspension is already in effect.

One player not listed here is South Africa’s Teboho Mokoena, who has two yellow cards but serves his suspension in the final group match. Since cards reset after the groups, if South Africa proceeds, he will start the knockouts with a clean record.
