Wrexham's Perfect Response: Phil Parkinson's 3-0 Victory at Millwall

Phil Parkinson, under scrutiny after Wrexham’s stuttering start to life in the Championship, has delivered what one of his former leaders calls the perfect reply.

A ruthless 3-0 win away at Millwall – last season’s beaten play-off semi-finalists – gave Wrexham their first league victory of the campaign and, just as importantly, their first clean sheet. At a ground that usually swallows visiting teams whole, they dictated everything.

Before the trip to The Den, Parkinson’s side were winless in four across all competitions and still searching for defensive stability. The questions had started to grow louder. Ex-Wales striker Iwan Roberts had even suggested the Wrexham boss was “probably under pressure for the first time” since taking charge in 2021.

The noise reached the dressing room. The response came on the pitch.

Ben Tozer, who captained Wrexham through back-to-back promotions and made 136 appearances for the club, watched on and saw a manager answering his critics in the way he knows best.

“Parkinson has been questioned after their start,” Tozer told BBC Radio Wales. “But he will have known there was a response coming from the team and he made the right changes – bringing back [Max] Cleworth and [Josh] Windass – to get that response.”

The pressure finally told – not on Wrexham, but on Millwall. The home crowd turned early, frustrated as Parkinson’s team took control and never let go.

“Parkinson has often been questioned, but he always comes up with the answers,” Tozer said. For him, this was no smash-and-grab. It was a statement.

“That was pretty much the perfect away performance at a really tough place to play that saw the home crowd turn on their team pretty early. Three goals, a clean sheet and no shots on target faced.”

Those numbers strip away any debate. Wrexham didn’t just win; they suffocated Millwall. Even at 3-0 up, they kept the tempo high, the structure tight, and the hosts at arm’s length.

“They controlled the game, even at three-nil, and the players coming off the bench kept the intensity and energy levels high,” Tozer added.

For a manager supposedly under early-season pressure, this was as clear an answer as Parkinson could give. The question now is whether Wrexham can turn one perfect away day into a new Championship standard.
