Zechiël's Transfer Saga: From Lille Pursuit to Feyenoord Commitment
Gjivai Zechiël thought he was gone.
At the end of August, the Feyenoord midfielder stood on the brink of a move to Lille OSC, a transfer that looked serious enough to change the course of his career. Bids came in, one after another. The last offer reportedly climbed to around €17 million including bonuses – heavyweight money for a 22-year-old still at the start of his breakthrough.
“That was pretty serious,” Zechiël told Voetbal International. At that moment, in his mind, France made sense. A new league, a new stage, a sporting step he believed would push him on.
Then everything flipped.
Lille calling, Feyenoord refusing
Lille had identified Zechiël as a key target and pushed hard. Feyenoord pushed back harder. Inside De Kuip, the hierarchy had no intention of losing a player they see as central to both the present and the future of the team.
The French club kept raising the stakes. Feyenoord kept saying no.
From the outside, it looked like the classic late-window tug of war: money on one side, sporting and emotional value on the other. For Zechiël, it was more personal. He admits that, in the heat of the moment, the move felt like the right step “from a sporting point of view.”
But the transfer never materialised. The window closed. The suitcase stayed in the cupboard.
And Zechiël stayed in Rotterdam.
Growing into the shirt
Time has a way of sharpening perspective. Looking back now, Zechiël’s tone is different. Calmer. More rooted.
“I am grateful and happy that I am here, because I am simply doing well here,” he said. “I feel at home here, and I am grateful to be out on the pitch here. I am happy that I get to play for this club.”
That sense of belonging didn’t arrive overnight. It grew with minutes, with trust, with responsibility.
“In the end, you grow into the team,” he explained. “You start to understand your role in the team, but also the staff you are dealing with. That is, of course, also an important part of it. The staff and our style of play suit me very well.”
That last line matters. Feyenoord’s aggressive, front-foot football has given Zechiël a platform to show more than just tidy passing. He presses, he breaks lines, he arrives in the box. And right now, he’s producing.
Feyenoord move fast to lock him in
Once it became clear Lille would not get their man, Feyenoord wasted no time. Keeping Zechiël wasn’t just about blocking a sale; it was about sending a message.
At the start of September, ESPN reporter Sinclair Bischop revealed that the club had reached a verbal agreement with the midfielder over a contract extension. His current deal already runs until mid-2028, but Feyenoord want that commitment nailed down and reinforced.
“If everything goes well, that should be possible,” Zechiël said of the new agreement – a measured line, but one that points towards a long-term stay.
End product to match the promise
On the pitch, his response to the transfer saga has been emphatic.
Zechiël has opened the new season in outstanding form. Across Feyenoord’s first six competitive matches, he has produced four goals and three assists – numbers that would stand out for a forward, let alone a midfielder still bedding into a leading role.
The move to Lille collapsed. The price tag stayed. So did the pressure.
Right now, Zechiël is turning all of it into fuel for Feyenoord.
