Alexander Zverev to End 35-Year German Drought After Carlos Alcaraz's Upset in Shanghai
Carlos Alcaraz faced a surprising exit at the Shanghai Masters, falling in straight sets to Zizou Bergs in the third round. Bergs secured the win with scores of 7-5 and 7-6, holding steady in the tiebreak despite Alcaraz’s late comeback attempt after breaking serve at 6-5 in the second set.
Alcaraz, who recently claimed his 27th ATP title at the Japan Open, suffered his fifth loss this season. This unexpected defeat means he cannot claim the year-end number one spot for 2026.
Alexander Zverev Set to Finish as Year-End World Number One
With Alcaraz out and current world number one Jannik Sinner sidelined due to a knee injury, Alexander Zverev is now assured of finishing 2026 ranked first globally. The 29-year-old German has had his strongest season yet, capturing his first two Grand Slam titles at Roland Garros and the US Open.
Zverev also reached the Wimbledon final, losing to Sinner, and made deep runs in other major tournaments, including the Madrid Open final and semifinals appearances in Indian Wells, Miami, and Monte-Carlo. Additionally, he led Team Europe to victory at the Laver Cup.
This achievement will end a 35-year wait for Germany to have a male player at the top of the ATP rankings since Boris Becker in 1991. Across both men's and women's tennis, Zverev will be the first German singles world number one since Angelique Kerber in 2017.
His rise also breaks the recent dominance of Sinner and Alcaraz, making him the first player outside these two to hold the number one ranking since Novak Djokovic in June 2024.
Zverev Reacts to Securing Top Spot
"It’s been a fantastic season for me winning in Paris and New York, and knowing that I will finish the year on top of the rankings is just a dream come true. So much work and effort have been put into achieving this goal, especially after coming back from the ankle injury," said Zverev, referring to his 2022 Roland Garros semifinal injury where he tore all three lateral ligaments in his right ankle.
He added, "I look forward to finishing the season in style." Zverev is currently competing at the Shanghai Masters, having advanced to the fourth round, with plans to play at the Paris Masters and the ATP Finals in Turin later this year.
Alcaraz's Post-Grand Slam Masters Struggles Continue
Despite his talents, Alcaraz has consistently struggled in the Masters 1000 events following Grand Slam tournaments, particularly at Shanghai and Paris. Over six years, he has rarely progressed beyond the quarterfinal stage at these events.

Alcaraz has never won either the Shanghai or Paris Masters, nor the Canadian Open, which is another Masters 1000 event he's only competed in twice, failing to advance past the quarterfinals.
