Insights from AFC Champions League Matchday One: Team Strategies and Performances
The AFC Champions League has resumed with a larger presence of K League clubs than ever before. Across both the AFC Champions League Elite and AFC Champions League Two, five K League teams have stepped onto the Asian stage, each showing different approaches toward the competition.
Some clubs see this tournament as a chance to bounce back from domestic struggles, while others aim for their first Asian title. Despite an upcoming international break after just one more round, not all teams stuck to their regular lineups. Coaches took varied routes to tackle their opening fixtures.
Daejeon Hana Citizen 1-0 Kyoto Sanga
Daejeon Hana Citizen marked their return to the AFC Champions League after 23 years with a solid 1-0 victory over Kyoto Sanga at home. Manager Hwang Sun-hong fielded his strongest lineup, emphasizing the competition’s significance for the club. The match started nervously, with Kyoto pressing sharper in the first half. However, Daejeon gained control in the second half despite a disallowed goal by Gustav Ludwigson.
The winning goal came from Victor Bobsin, who netted his third consecutive goal for Daejeon with a remarkable strike from outside the box twelve minutes before full time. Defender Kang Yoon-seong expressed how this experience has motivated the team to improve domestically to qualify again next year, aiming to build confidence moving forward.
"Playing in the ACLE for the first time, I really got a taste of it. It made me want to be in it again next year. We can’t qualify with our current league position, so we need to improve. The players are all clearly aware of this," Kang said.
Manager Hwang also highlighted tactical lessons, particularly on tempo and intensity, reflecting on the pressing style of J.League opponents and its implications for Korean football.
"The speed and intensity of pressing by J.League teams are absolutely outstanding. If that cannot be overcome, Korean football and the K League cannot develop further. We need to think about tempo and manage games more proactively," Hwang stated.
Beijing FC 3-1 Pohang Steelers
Pohang Steelers appeared to treat their first ACL Elite fixture lightly. Coach Park Tae-ha rotated the entire starting lineup compared to their recent league match, focusing on player fitness due to a packed schedule. The result was a 3-1 defeat away at Beijing FC.
Park emphasized that the priority is learning from mistakes rather than dwelling on the loss.
"This was only our first game, and when we return to Korea, we will work on improving these areas in the league. Football doesn’t end after one game; players need to accept their mistakes and focus on the next match," Park said.
Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors 2-1 Kashiwa Reysol
Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors secured a hard-fought 2-1 home win against Kashiwa Reysol, fueled by determination. With their Korea Cup exit and no longer in the title hunt, this competition offers a chance to regain pride.
After falling behind to a powerful left-footed shot by Kenshin Yuba from outside the box, Jeonbuk bounced back quickly. Tiago Orobo equalized with a close-range header early in the second half, followed by a decisive goal from Italo in the 69th minute. This victory marked Jeonbuk’s first ACL Elite win since February 2024 and their first match in the competition since March 2024.
FC Seoul 0-1 Persib Bandung
FC Seoul dropped down to ACL Two despite a sixth-place finish in K League 1 last season. The club seems to use this tournament primarily to develop younger players. Even with a two-week break approaching and a comfortable lead in the league, manager Kim Gi-dong fielded fringe and youth players in their Group E opener against Persib Bandung.
Notable debuts included 18-year-old left back Shin Ji-seop, midfielders Ko Pil-gwan (19) and Kim Min-jun (23), plus the surprising return of centre back Lee Sang-min after three years sidelined by injuries.
Kitchee SC 0-0 Gangwon FC
Gangwon FC, relegated to ACL Two after losing a playoff to Gamba Osaka last year, also opted for squad rotation. Manager Chung Kyung-ho fielded mainly second- or third-string players in the goalless draw against Kitchee SC from Hong Kong.
The match set a new record for Gangwon as right back Choi Jae-hyeok became the youngest-ever player to debut for the club at 16 years, 10 months, and 13 days. Several other young players earned their first starts and minutes, signaling a clear focus on youth development in the competition.
