Ajax and Owen Wijndal Part Ways as Left-Back Order Changes
Ajax have parted company with Owen Wijndal with immediate effect, drawing a sudden line under the left-back’s time in Amsterdam as his route to the first team closed completely.
The 26-year-old, who still had a contract at the Johan Cruyff ArenA running until mid-2027, has agreed to terminate his deal, according to Voetbal International. The decision clears space in Ajax’s wage bill and leaves Wijndal free to find a new club, though his next destination is not yet known.
This is not a move born overnight. The writing had been on the wall all summer.
Ajax brought in two new left-backs in the current window: Caio Henrique and 19-year-old Spaniard Jofre Torrents. Henrique quickly moved ahead of Wijndal in the hierarchy in recent weeks, and last weekend Torrents seemed to leapfrog him as well.
Recent Match Impact
The Telstar match underlined the shift. In the 0-4 win, Torrents came off the bench to get minutes. Wijndal never left his seat.
Talks between club and player had been ongoing in recent weeks as both sides searched for a way out of an increasingly awkward situation. That solution has now arrived in the form of a clean break. Wijndal said his goodbyes to team-mates on Wednesday, bringing an end to a spell that never fully matched the expectations that greeted his arrival.
Ajax signed the Zaandam-born defender from AZ in 2022 for around €10 million, seeing him as a long-term option on the left flank. Instead, his trajectory stalled. During the 2023/24 season he was loaned out to Royal Antwerp FC, a clear signal that his status in Amsterdam had weakened.
Even so, his time at Ajax was not without impact. Wijndal made 77 official appearances for the club, scoring 3 goals and providing 7 assists.
Now Ajax move on with Henrique and Torrents competing for the left-back spot, and Wijndal steps into the market as a free agent at 26. For a player once viewed as a cornerstone for club and country, the next move will define whether this is a detour in his career – or a turning point.
