Arsenal’s title defence has barely begun, yet the transfer machine at London Colney is already whirring again. Mikel Arteta, still chasing marginal gains in every area of his squad, is eyeing another move into familiar territory: Club Brugge.
Just weeks after bringing in winger Christos Tzolis from the Belgian side, Arsenal are now tracking highly rated full-back Joaquin Seys, valued at around £30 million. The Gunners want a different profile at full-back, a defender who can add flexibility and depth as they prepare for another gruelling campaign at the top of English football.
They are not alone.
A new full-back arms race
Seys, a Belgian international, has drawn admiring glances from across the Premier League. Manchester United have joined the chase, turning to the Brugge defender after seeing an approach for Lewis Hall knocked back by Newcastle United. Newcastle have made it clear Hall is not for sale, forcing United to pivot quickly.
The need at Old Trafford is obvious. United’s issues at full-back have dragged on, with injuries and inconsistency eroding stability on the flanks. Luke Shaw’s future as the undisputed first-choice left-back is under scrutiny, and the club’s hierarchy are determined to find a long-term solution before their Champions League return.
Seys fits that brief. Young, already capped by his country, and tested at the highest level after impressing at this summer’s World Cup, he has become one of the most closely watched defenders in Europe in recent months.
Arsenal’s quiet groundwork
Arsenal, though, have not come to the party late. Arteta’s staff have been tracking Seys extensively, sending scouts on repeated trips to Belgium. A detailed dossier has already landed on the head coach’s desk, outlining what the Brugge defender could bring to a squad built on tactical versatility and intensity.
Arteta has been clear about the club’s stance in this window. “Well, that’s what we’re trying to do,” he told reporters when asked about further signings. “If we have the right player in the market to make us much better. We are very looking forward to that.”
Seys is precisely the kind of profile that fits that mantra: young, upward trajectory, and comfortable in modern full-back roles that demand as much on the ball as off it.
Competition across Europe
The battle will not be confined to England. Aston Villa, Benfica and Porto are all in the frame, according to reports.
Unai Emery’s Villa have their own gap to plug. Lucas Digne has returned to PSG, leaving Villa light at left-back as they attempt to consolidate their place among the Premier League’s European contenders. A defender with Seys’ blend of energy and defensive discipline would slot neatly into Emery’s aggressive, front-foot system.
On the continent, Portuguese heavyweights Benfica and Porto are watching closely. Both clubs have built reputations on identifying and developing emerging talents before selling them on at a premium. Seys, with three years remaining on his Brugge contract, fits that model perfectly.
Brugge hold the cards – for now
Crucially, Club Brugge are under no immediate pressure to sell. With Seys tied down for another three seasons, the Belgian side can afford to stand firm and wait for the right offer. The £30m valuation is significant, but not prohibitive for Premier League clubs used to paying a premium for potential.
For Manchester United, that price is unlikely to be a deterrent. Their need at full-back is urgent, and the club is prepared to spend to solve a problem that has lingered for too long. Arsenal, meanwhile, must weigh the fee against other priorities in a squad that still has areas to refine despite last season’s title win.
