After another summer of heavy investment at Stamford Bridge and changes in the coaching staff, Chelsea have certainly bolstered their attacking options. Palmer, who scored 25 goals in his debut season and has won both the Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup with the club, had a tough 2025-26 campaign that saw him miss out on England’s World Cup squad.
There were rumors of Palmer returning to Manchester United, but he remains committed to Chelsea under a long-term contract. His spirits lifted further when fellow Manchester City academy graduate Rogers joined him in London.
A Creative Force Behind Pedro
Under manager Xabi Alonso, Palmer and Rogers are positioned just behind Brazilian striker Pedro, who himself is eager to prove his worth after missing out on World Cup selection. Chelsea started the 2026-27 season strong, netting nine goals across three games in the Premier League and Carabao Cup, positioning themselves as serious contenders to Arsenal’s title defense.
Gullit Backs Chelsea’s Front Three
Speaking for SportsCasting.com, Gullit gave his verdict on Chelsea’s attacking lineup when asked if they represented the Premier League’s most effective front three:
“The short answer is yes. You can see the potential of Chelsea, but it’s more about the collective philosophy of Alonso. They played three at the back against Fulham, but I could see a very strong midfield with Cole Palmer having a kind of freedom without Enzo Fernandez, which for now is a bit of a controversial call. I do believe Chelsea have a strong side, a very strong side.”
Gullit expressed some reservations about new additions Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson, questioning whether their roles as mentors rather than regular starters will truly benefit the squad during challenging periods. He reflected on his past desire for an experienced first-choice player to keep the team uplifted through rough patches.
“So yes, I believe there is a strong, strong squad. Palmer will want revenge. He didn’t take part in the World Cup. England did well there; they reached the semi-final. But everyone could see the evidence that if he’d been there under the right discipline, he could perform.”
The former Chelsea icon highlighted Palmer's readiness for the current season, noting the previous speculation about a move to Manchester United and praising his decision to stay. Without European distractions this year, Palmer has to deliver consistently.
“At the very least, we want to see him committed, and if there’s any lingering disappointment from missing the World Cup, I hope Chelsea benefit once they’ve also sorted out their issues with players.”
Defensive Concerns and Upcoming Fixtures
Chelsea’s main challenge lies in shoring up their defense, as they conceded five goals in their first two league matches. The signing of World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emi Martinez aims to address those problems.
If Chelsea manage to tighten up at the back, the threat posed by Palmer, Rogers, and Pedro upfront should be enough to secure important points. Their next test comes on Sunday with a trip to face defending champions Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium after the transfer window has closed.
