Ederson's World Cup Call Delays Manchester United Move
Manchester United’s first signing of the Michael Carrick era is all but in place. They just might have to wait to actually get their hands on him.
Atalanta midfielder Ederson, who has agreed a move to Old Trafford for an initial £35 million, has been handed a late call-up to Brazil’s 2026 World Cup squad. His inclusion follows an injury to Roma right-back Wesley, opening a door the 26-year-old looked unlikely to walk through a few weeks ago.
Ignored in the original squad list, Ederson now heads to North America to join the Selecao, adding a World Cup chapter to a stop-start international career. He has three caps for Brazil, but none since 2025. That hiatus is over at the biggest tournament of all.
For United, the timing is awkward but revealing. They have moved decisively to secure the defensive midfielder as the direct successor to Casemiro, whose departure has left a sizeable gap at the base of their midfield. Carrick, now permanent manager, has made Ederson his first major statement signing, a player identified to reshape the spine of his team.
The deal is agreed, the plan is clear. What changes now is the calendar.
United want the transfer wrapped up as quickly as possible, but any hope of an immediate integration into Carrick’s pre-season plans has slipped. Ederson will not report to his new club until after Brazil’s World Cup campaign ends, shortening his bedding-in period before the new season and delaying Carrick’s chance to work with him on the training pitch.
His arrival, though, would push United’s World Cup contingent to 13 players once the move is confirmed, underlining both the scale of their international presence and the level at which Carrick expects his squad to operate.
For Ederson, the next few weeks offer a double audition: on the World Cup stage for Brazil, and in the eyes of his soon-to-be supporters in Manchester. For United, the question is simple: when he finally walks through the doors at Carrington, will he be just a new signing, or a World Cup star arriving at full stride?
