England's Defensive Dilemma Ahead of World Cup Clash with Mexico

England face an awkward defensive puzzle on the eve of their World Cup last-16 clash with Mexico after Djed Spence reported a muscular problem.

The 25-year-old, who impressed at right-back in the last-32 win over DR Congo, has complained of a niggle that leaves his involvement at the Azteca Stadium in doubt. The nature of the Tottenham defender’s issue has not been specified, and his fitness will be monitored right up to Sunday night’s kick-off (Monday 01:00 BST).

It is the last thing Thomas Tuchel needed before stepping into one of world football’s most intimidating arenas.

If Spence fails to make it, the England head coach will be forced into yet another reshuffle across his back line. Right-back Reece James is still a major doubt as he continues to manage a hamstring problem, leaving Tuchel short of natural options on that flank.

There is at least one piece of good news. Jarell Quansah is back in contention after an ankle injury picked up in the group-stage win over Panama ruled him out of the DR Congo tie. His return gives Tuchel an extra body, and perhaps the flexibility to think beyond a straight swap at full-back.

Those injuries may do more than tweak the team sheet. They could change the entire shape.

With both senior right-backs uncertain and Quansah now available, Tuchel may be tempted to adjust England’s formation to better protect a patched-up defence in the thin air and hostile noise of Mexico City. The tactical board will be busy; so will the medical room.

One thing is clear: before England can think about silencing the Azteca, they must first solve the question of who actually takes the field.
