Gattuso shuts down Icardi transfer rumors: loyalty to current squad

Gennaro Gattuso has moved decisively to shut down rumours linking his side with a move for Mauro Icardi, insisting the club will stand by the attacking options it already brought in this summer.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, the coach was visibly keen to end the saga once and for all. Via Calciomercato.com, he drew a clear line in the sand.

“Let's put this whole Icardi mess to rest,” Gattuso said. “He has scored 250 goals in his career, and nobody questions his value. We made our choices; we signed [Andrea] Pinamonti and [Albert] Gudmundsson, and when you give your word to players, you can't go back on it. With all due respect to Icardi, I've discussed it with the president and the director, and it's right to stick to what we have.”

The message was blunt: loyalty to the current squad comes first. For Gattuso, the market is closed not just in theory but in principle.

He then lifted the lid on the practical problem behind any late swoop for another forward – a squad already straining at the seams.

“Right now, we already have players who have to sit out training because we have six full-backs,” he explained. “When Marusic returns, two of them will have to be left out, and that doesn't look good.”

Too many options, not enough space. Gattuso knows he must trim and trust, not add another big name to an already crowded dressing room.
